maverickz3r0: swiss army knife, text from rodney mckay in sga (Stargate)

After a certain point, I think Rodney was probably the main reason anyone watched the show.

I always found Kavanagh to be proof that no matter how right or smart you are, unless you're not a complete obnoxious jackass no one's going to listen to you. Rodney was at least endearing in his obnoxiousness on SG:A, so they listened to him--but Kavanagh had this quality that seemed to grate on everyone, so they didn't listen to him. (Also, the Stargate program has never historically cared for half the regulations he complained about Elizabeth breaking.)

Quite a few people were still watching despite the overuse of Rodney by the end. He was the writers favorite and they just couldn't seem to write for anyone else. It was getting extremely annoying. A great character in moderate doses, his overuse turned some of us a bit sour.

Actually, I watched to the bitter end, and by season five Rodney was my most hated character.

He was never my favourite, but I liked him in season 1 and 2. It was all downhill from there.

Yeah, I don't like Elizabeth at all. She was supposed to be this ~amazing diplomat, but she was pretty much crap at it - at everything, really. Plus, her eyes were weird. They were always very wide, like she was permanently shocked.

Rodney's my favorite ♥

And I'm the exact opposite. I never liked Rodney at all, and Elizabeth was by far my favorite character. By the time she left, I didn't like John much anymore, so I kind of stopped watching.

Elizabeth had such mom hair. Probably wore mom jeans on her downtime.

I liked Rodney enough, but Elizabeth was by far my favorite as well <3.

(true story I have a professor this semester who reminds me of Elizabeth a lot, both in appearance and voice)

I liked Rodney and loved John but Elizabeth was BY FAR my favorite. The show just wasn't the same without her.

She was a great character in theory. But to me she came off as stuck up wannabe prom queen who saw everyone's flaws but hers. Like what. If SGA had better writers stuff could have been awesome.

WEHT David Hewlett?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
He directed and acted in some Syfy Saturday movie, something about a Snowman. He was in that Planet of the Apes movie (a brief but pivotal part), he's been doing webisodes with his sister (not sci-fi) and the big thing is he just finished production on a movie he wrote called Debug that has Jason Momoa and his sister in it. Seems like he wants to go into directing more than acting. Also, he lost quite a bit of weight since SGA, people were saying too much in fact.

Aww, I liked Weir. Well, I liked the idea of her character. I agree the execution left a lot to be desired. Those writers kind of sucked at writing competent leaders and/or women.

I liked Elizabeth more the second time around. (And when she appeared later on in the series. Nostalgia, maybe.) She's still nowhere near my favorite character but she didn't irritate me much anymore.

Kavanagh rubbed me the wrong way (like he did the cast) but I wouldn't say I hate him either. You have a point about his characterization.

Personally, I watched for the whole team (Teyla, Ronon, John and Rodney.) John and Rodney were probably my favorites, but the team wasn't the same without any of them. (I never felt that way about Ford, tbh.)

I was mostly indifferent to Weir. Sometimes she could be sort of cool, but then she went all batshit on Col. Caldwell, acting like he didn't have Atlantis' best interests in mind, only his own promotion that I couldn't help but hate her a little.

I didn't really like Weir. She bugged me. Carter never got a chance to really shine (especially since AT left for Sanctuary at the end of S.4). I'm probably the only person in the world who really enjoyed Woolsey in charge :P

I didn't really hate her but I didn't like her either. I mostly just think the actress sucked. I never bought her delivery.

Rodney was far and away the most entertaining part of the show. At least until they stuck him with Keller.

I liked Weir for the most part. By the end her character got a little fuzzy, but I enjoyed having a tough woman in charge.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Since morals are an important part of ethics, yeah, she really ought to be taking those into consideration when making decisions.

I'm on bored with everything else you said though.

While I disagree with your assessment of Elizabeth (she is one of my favorite characters), I think you are spot on about Kavanagh.

I made my SGA fic debut with a series of fics featuring Bates/Kavanagh; I know the show portrays both characters pretty negatively. We're supposed to think Bates is a hard liner, that he's more interested in military goals than the civilian pursuit of peace, that he dislikes John merely because Sumner had done so, that he's racist and xenophobic because he suspects the Athosians of selling them out to the Wraith. And yet, his objections aren't unreasonable. Somehow the Wraith are being alerted to their presence when they go through the Gate, and as much as the Atlantis expedition might want to trust the Athosians, like any group of people, the Athosians must contain some some examples of moral turpitude. Regarding Kavanagh, as much as I love Elizabeth (and lord do I love that woman, hard hard hard hard, the love it knows no bounds), she's totally out of line in the way she treats him in "Thirty-Eight Minutes," his debut episode. Kavanagh suggests that in trying to save the stuck jumper, they risk blowing up the gate and killing everyone on Atlantis. To me, this is a reasonable objection to make. Possibly they could begin evacuating personnel to the mainland or to space in the jumpers or even to the outer extremities of the city to try to minimize casualties. But Elizabeth treats him as if he's making the suggestion only in the interests of self-preservation. Also, her threat to just chuck him through the gate to an uninhabited world, while clearly one she would never follow through with, is extremely inappropriate.

I think the show really suffers when Bates and Kavanagh leave because Rodney, Elizabeth, and John are generally united in their decision making. I think having a few outside voices of dissent was really important; even though the internal logic of the show consistently dismisses the objections that Bates and Kavanagh make, their objections generally make sense. Like, what would Kavanagh have to say about the whole Michael project? LOL

I wasn't a huge fan of Weir, but when she came back for that Mortal Coil ep she did seem to fill a gap I didn't know was there after she left. Oh well. Rodney was fine and I liked him but I got REALLY sick of the show focusing on him to the exclusion of the rest of the team. I was pretty tired of it by the end of the series and DH's sometimes over the top acting started to grate. I mainly watched for Sheppard anyway, he was my favorite. The episodes where they focused on the team interaction were the best.

This shouldn't need to be a secret, but I can see why it is. I liked both Elizabeth (despite her failures) and Kavanagh (because he was right sometimes, too).
The way they went up against each other was awesome.
There should be more kink, is all.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just too bad Weir's linguistic skills didn't "effect" the writing of this secret.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
One of the first things I loved about SGU was that they finally wrote a show that didn't sweep consequences for actions under the rug for the sake of having the "heroes" win.

Love SGA, too, but I think Universe was a better show in the end.

Stargate for me has always been about living with the people around you: regardless if you agree with them or hate what they stand for. It's about family and finding that middle ground to work together.

I really liked every character in Atlantis and SG-1 for this. They were all so different and came from different perspectives. The reason why Rodney was so endearing was because he wasn't pampered or treated like he was perfect. He was picked on, called out on bullshit, but respected like a human being for just trying to do a job.

It's bullshit when people call him 2-dimensional or to say he lacked subtlety just because he was generally louder than most. He had some great moments.

I'm suddenly reminded as to why I stopped participating in Stargate Fandom. So much hate. :(
