Lard

(Anonymous) 2013-04-03 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom told me that she used to know someone who would eat lard. This person also ate dog food and duck food and hair gel, and probably some other gross stuff.

Would you eat lard? Or do you think lard is disgusting?

It's a gross texture - I'd gag pretty bad on it.

Eat lard like straight up just spoonfuls of lard? Or in something. My grandma used to use lard in a lot of her cooking but I've never known anyone to just eat plain lard. That's pretty disgusting.

Like, just eating a block of lard on its own? Because my dad frys horribly greasy breakfasts in lard and I find that revolting but it is common enough.

But hair gel? Surely that can't be good for you?

No. The word itself makes me feel uneasy.

Ew, no. Gross. I did have potato chips made with lard once, though, and those were great.

Lard makes the best crunchy sugar cookies, too. But I couldn't eat it by itself, no.

If it is used in the making of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smultring I am all for it.

If not, I don't put butter on bread, which should answer your question?

I know tons of people who cook with lard, but to eat it with a spoon or something? Nasty. And ridiculously unhealthy.

Lard is disgusting, but would it be possible for me to eat it? Of course. I don't know why I would, but I probably could.

It makes the best biscuits on Earth, though, if we're talking cooking here. :)

In something, sure, but by itself? Hell no.

If it's used in baked goods, like pie dough, I see no problem. I tend to avoid it, though, because I prefer not to eat much beef or pork for environmental reasons (I assume lard comes from one or both of those animals?) and have a bunch of vegan/vegetarian friends. I don't think I'd be able to stomach lard straight-up, though, it that's what you're talking about.

All the time, or did they just eat it sometimes? A lot of poor/undernourished women would get cravings for, and eat, chalk and clay and dirt when they were pregnant, because their diets were so lacking.

Perhaps this person was the same.

Or perhaps they were just strangely attracted to stuff with horrifying texture and smell.

I could not eat lard by itself, it is horrifying. In stuff it's not much better. Leaves a film in my mouth.
