I understand this, OP. I play World of Warcraft and Fire Emblem and occasionally shit like Tetris or the old Kirby games/Mario3/etc but I don't play games like I used to.

Part of it is because I'm older now and don't have the time to invest hundreds of hours into games like Pokémon or Dragon Age/etc., and the other reason is because WoW spoiled me to the social aspect of gaming though after I quit WoW I will never play another MMO again.

/hug

I played a lot of video games as a kid but when I got into college that stopped and ever since then, I rarely have time to play games. I used to have time here and there to play my DS but that stopped about a year ago. I feel your pain

lets plays >>>> actually playing for me. i don't have any friends or anyone to play with, and i suck, so i enjoy watching other people do it more.

I just play handhelds these days, which doesn't make me a real gamer *shrug*. Personally, I go in and out of periods where I get into games a lot. Maybe you just need that one game to get really into?

The lack of time is probably why I rack up a greater total play tim on handhelds more than consoles or pc. I get around to the latter pretty slowly.

Ugh, I feel you. I so very much feel you. It just seems like the focus is on longer and complex games, supposedly to make it "more for your money" type of thing.

I don't mind save points and playing for a couple hours a session, but I can count on one hand the number of games I've actually had the attention span and desire to finish. It's just...too much. Which you can get a lot of people slamming you for, but whatever.

pantswarrior: Gaming by candlelight equals romantic evening. (gamer)

Can relate to this. But it's not so much that I don't have the time, it's just that I still love the games I played when I was younger and want to replay them far more than I want to play anything I'm seeing released nowadays. Zero interest in multiplayer or app games, and it seems like that's practically all I'm seeing anymore. So with the occasional exception, all my gaming in the last few years (other than Rock Band) has been replaying PS2/DS or earlier era games, sometimes the HD/portable remakes of them, sometimes even playing games from those eras I never got around to playing when they were new... but hardly ever current games. I also miss pixel art and not everything having to be hyper-realistic and 3D. ;_;

I hear you. I mainly like playing Adventure games and well it's pretty damn hard to find any these days that aren't just 'hidden object games'.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I feel you. I think that, for some of us, it's just a part of getting older. A lot of times, there's a style that resonates with someone in a particular way when they're young and, once that style falls out of fashion, a vital part of what inspired interest in the first place seems to have been taken away.

The same thing happens with other sorts of media, particularly music.

I know how you feel anon, and I'd like to add that I feel like a cranky old lady every time there's yet another PS3/360 system update or day 1 dlc/patches and I mourn for the old days of just plugging in the cd/cartridge and just PLAYING instead of this nonsense.

You do still play video games tho. Maybe not games from 2013, but you do still play your old favs. I think that counts.

I think people wanting to be held to the title of "gamer" kinda skews things for people. If you like playing games you like playing games. Or if you only play puzzle games, then you can still be a gamer, just a different type. You can still say you play video games even if you just play them once and a while.

If watching your husband or LPs make you happy rather than playing a video game, so be it. Personally I know how it is to lose love for something you had so much for in the past, but new things crop up and slowly cover the void. It's okay to change.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Video games are something I share with my husband, and despite being relatively new parents, we can find time. We usually play in the evenings, and tend to stick to MMOs and shooters that we can pick up and drop freely.

JRPGs and other games that you have to sink dozens of hours into aren't really feasible, but there are definitely options out there. We stick to multiplayer games and make it a together thing, and thus we can usually find time for at least a couple hours every night.

You can try checking the website Co-Optimus for lists of games that are multiplayer.

I'm in a somewhat similar situation. You know, it's really okay. As long as you're happy then what does it matter? Call yourself whatever you want. Play whatever you want. Who cares what strangers on the internet, who are probably judgmental assholes anyway, think?

If you enjoy watching lets plays then I don't see the problem, but if you don't get the same enjoyment out of those or want to play modern games there are plenty that aren't anywhere near 40 hours long. (Granted, most of them aren't RPG's, but...maybe try a different genre?) TBH most the games I've played in the last few years haven't been longer than 12 or so hours long. *shrugs*

Play what you like you like, OP. Don't force ourself into doing something just to please "gaming standards"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I can play longer games that I've played before, since I'm already familiar with them, but it still helps if I'm not very involved with the story. I still have to stop myself before listing "video games" as an interest.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm the same. I can still power through long, plotty RPGs if the story is interesting, but for the most part, I just don't really have time to sit down and crank my way through a game like I used to back when I was in high school, and I find myself going back to old favorites more than trying new stuff. It doesn't really help either that it feels like mainstream gaming is focusing more and more on everything being a gritty gray realistic-looking first-person shooters with competitive online multiplayer, which isn't really what I'm into. (I know there's more stuff out there, but it feels like all that gets promoted is either that or Mario...)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
If you don't have time to play, why do you have time to watch your husband play?

You just lost interest. It's probably not that you don't have the time to invest in these games, it's that you choose to use your free time in other ways. And that's okay.
ariakas: (lol hikawa)

You lost interest in an old hobby. It happens. So long as you're not openly denying this for fear of losing "gamer cred" or something asinine like that, I think you're fine.
