human x non-human ships

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone have any recommendations for any media with a human x non-human pairing? Actual romance or just heavy subtext is fine.

Spacetrawler. Read Spacetrawler.

It's a science-fiction webcomic about a group of humans who get abducted to help fight an evil alien space bureaucracy. There's a lot of relationships between humans and aliens in it, and it's never done in a leering way, and they range from promiscuous sex (Dmitri, who is the best character) to a touching, committed relationship between a woman (Martina, who is the best character) and a giant space slug. And also it's really good. Right up your alley.

Also, you should check out James Tiptree's short story "And I Awoke And Found Me Here On The Cold Hill's Side". Which isn't romance, so much, and it's not really positive, but it's still about human x alien, and it's a great short story writer, and Tiptree was a great writer, so check her out.

All five Star Trek series have quite a few human x alien (and alien x different species of alien) pairings.

Buffy has Buffy x Angel and Buffy x Spike (human x vampire) and Xander x Anya (human x demon).

Doctor Who has the Doctor x River Song as actual romance, and heavy subtext with the Doctor x Jack and the Doctor x Rose Tyler. Plus a whole bunch of examples between one-off human and alien characters.

Lord of the Rings has Aragorn x Arwen (human x elf)

I'm too lazy atm to think of more.

Doctor x River Song

Didn't being conceived on the TARDIS make her a Time Lady?

Oh I guess that's right. I have a hard time keeping track of all the what-the-hell that happened in season 6...

Yeah, I'm not sure how it all was supposed to work, either. But we do see her regenerate (twice), so she's at least part Time Lady...

Disney's Gargoyles. Goliath(gargoyle)/Elisa(human) I shipped them so hard as a kid.

In Galaxy Quest one of the human main characters falls in love with an alien squid-person.

In all shades: friendship, love, or subtext.

Human/Robot: Chobits
Human/Demon or monster: Chrno Crusade, Blue Seed, Inu-Yasha
Human/Elf: Lord of the Rings
Human/God: Ovid's Metamorphoses, Pirates of the Caribbeans
Human/Fairy or spirit: The Secret of Kells
Human/Ogre, Human/not really human: Shrek and Shrek II
Human/Alien: Megamind, Dick Grayson and Koriand'r, Lois and Clark, Tenshi Muyo!
Human/Wizard: Howl's Moving Castle

And a last one, even if it's not exactly human/non-human: Green Lantern The Animated Series, for Razer and Aya.

I don't suppose you have any recs for human x mermaid that isn't just The Little Mermaid, by any chance?

I think the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie has one. And there's this art: http://gingerhaole.tumblr.com/post/44417560666/once-upon-a-time-i-drew-a-mermaid-and-a-pirate and http://katlay.tumblr.com/tagged/Shore%3A-A-love-story

The Mass Effect series (PC, Xbox, PS3) has multiple human/non-human pairings in it.

Yep! There's some great ones. To OP: The most popular are Liara/either Shepard, Tali/Shepard, Garrus/Shepard, Thane/Shepard, ..and others slip my mind right now but yeah there's lots of possibilities.

Re: human x non-human ships

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-05 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's all of them. If you're interested in a guy, go for Garrus--he has the most pay-off. If you're interested in a girl, either Liara or Tali. Liara has the most content, but Tali has a lot as well.

There are a couple of flings in the game with asari, but that's it.

Re: human x non-human ships

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-05 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. You can also choose which ones you like. There are non-human flings, non-human romances...and if you actually turn out to want to date a human, that's available too. You can go with characters that are fairly-human like the asari or drell species or very unhuman like Garrus and Tali.

Alien Nation had the human cop involved with one of the Newcomers, iirc; that may have just been in the books though.

So far, the only fandom I know of that fits is the Mass Effect fandom. The amount of secrets about it featuring alien-human romance has pretty much made itself known around here even to non-players like me.

Discworld has Carrot/Angua in the Watch series. Carrot was raised by dwarfs and considers himself a dwarf but he's atually human. Angua is a werewoflf. And recently Nobbs and a goblin have taken a fancy to each other.

In Supernatural, there's Dean/Castiel and a variety of other human/angel ships? And Crowley/Bobby is pretty popular which is demon/human.

My first thought was Babylon 5, where *the* main canon het pairing (from the second season) is a nicely, slowly developing human/alien relationship. This was the ship I compared (almost) everything to in the last fifteen years.

I know people mentioned Lord of the Rings, but there's also Luthien/Beren and Tuor/Idril in The Silmarillion for the Human/Elf pairing. And if you venture into the fandom, there's plenty of cross-species stuff.

Human/Cyborg (I don't think anyone has given you any examples for this yet): Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell (with extra genderfuckery subtext!), and Chobits.
