Scariest thing that you've done

Objectively - standing at the edge of a volcano.
Subjectively - every time I had to take an important oral exam for a diploma/qualification.

I say "objectively" because I wasn't scared. I was EXCITED.

Being a student and doing CPR on a guy and hearing his sternum break. Thought I killed him and broke down in tears. Instructor told me that I did well and the guy lived.

...did they not tell you that that's common when they were teaching you CPR? I mean, shit, that's one of the first things they told us when we were learning hot to properly do compressions.

Your story is a great example of why it should be something that people are told, so that they know what to expect and as such are not as scared when it happens.

getting on an airplane and moving to a foreign country, sight unseen, when I was 19. I'd never been out of my state before prior to that and I wasn't exactly bilingual either.

Not intentionally?

Me. Nine years old with my family in Puerto Rico visiting my grandparents' house. My sister and I were exploring their bedroom looking for interesting "treasure." I was diving in the closet when I found a huge gun in the back. I took it out thinking it was a toy. (All I had been exposed to that point were toy guns.) My sister, who was jumping on the bed at the time, waved her arms at me and yelled, "SHOOT ME! SHOOT ME!" I aimed, ready to pull the trigger when a voice in my head said, "Put the the gun back." In the past, every time I had not listened to my gut instinct, I suffered for it. This time, I listened. I put the gun back and told my sister, "Let's go downstairs." And we did.

Learned a short time later that the gun was real and it was loaded.

I had nightmares for months afterward about how close to killing my little sister I was.

Not nearly as serious, but this reminds me of messing around with an air rifle when I was eleven. Really powerful pistol that my friends dad had. Well we're screwing around with it and the pellet in the chamber drops out.

I look down the barrel to confirm this is the case, finger on the trigger the whole time, and then working under the assumption the chambers empty think 'heh I'll give my little bro a proper scare' and point it at his eye from a foot away. For god knows what reason at the very last second I centre it on his forehead instead and fire.

He's crying and bleeding everywhere and I learnt a lifelong lesson in gun safety having been a split second away from half blinding my brother or myself.

This is probably going to sound dumb, but the day I committed to the idea that suicide was no longer a viable option. Fucking terrified because that meant I had to actually start living, and taking chances, and change my life instead of just muddling along with the "easy out" of suicide.

Interned at the Cannes Film Festival, which was scary enough, but then through my own stupid fault I missed my flight to France. I wound up getting on a plane to Casablanca with a connecting flight to Nice, which I also missed (through no fault of my own this time). I wound up having to stay in Casablanca over night, figure out the whole hotel and food situation, and get myself back to the airport the next morning. Did I mention that I don't speak Arabic and my French completely sucks? Oh, and I had some problems with my phone, so at first I couldn't call my parents in the U.S. or my internship in France to let either of them know where I was and why.

Most nerve-wracking 24 hours of my life. And even though it started because of a stupid mistake I made, I'm really proud of myself for how I handled it.

Comps

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-04-05 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Basically, "Comps" is the qualifying test to be able to work on a dissertation in a phD program.

It's essentially the final exam for your entire academic life.

Drove a fuel truck through Baghdad in March, 2003. Then spent the next year driving it back and forth between Kuwait and Mosul.

Probably going scuba diving. Me and my buddies thought it was gonna be ~super fun!~ but after we descended, the horrible ear pain, not being able to see the ocean floor but only the dark abyss I had a panic attack. I started hyperventilating while flailing around as my mask filled with water. Thankfully we were pretty close to the surface and one of the instructors took helped me ascent quickly. I sat on the boat shaking petrified thinking what would have happened if I was underwater and couldn't resurface quick enough. I realized how much I feared the ocean.

Leaving to go on exchange halfway across the world for half a year. I was kind of this weird combination of THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME :D and OH GOD I'M GOING TO FAIL I'M GOING TO DIE I'M GOING TO HAVE TO EAT HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP WHY AM I GOING TO AMERICA SHIIIIIT...

It ended up being awesome :D

(Aside from the friend of the woman I was renting a room from, who tended to walk around with his loaded gun on his hip. I'm from a country with fairly strict gun control laws. I felt just a tiny bit afraid every time I saw him. And two and a half weeks after I left Tucson, there was that shooting... I love the States and want to live there one day, but fuck, America's gun laws terrify me.)

When I was a freshman in high school I had to watch my sisters every day after school for a little while because my mother didn't get home from work until 6 or 7 (I forget where my grandmother was during that time, but anyhow). Of course my little sisters used that as an excuse to act up and try to get away with things they weren't supposed to do when my parents were around, like buy candy from this shady lady who drove a van around my neighborhood selling candy to children (totally not a legit business and neither I nor my parents liked it).

So one day, I dragged the two oldest back inside to prevent them from wasting money on candy they weren't supposed to have in the first place, certainly not before dinner, and my oldest younger sister decided to throw one of her rollerblade skates at my head, which narrowly missed me. (Actually, I think it may have hit me on the shoulder or something.) I finally lost it, I was so angry, I just walked up to her and kneed her in the stomach as hard as I could, and I ended up knocking the wind out of her completely, because after all she was like ten years old and pretty tiny for her age. She clutched her torso and started rolling around on the ground gasping for air and obviously could not breathe, so I freaked out and grabbed the phone and just as I was about to call 911 she made this rasping sound and started breathing and said "I'm ok"

In hindsight, I still think she deserved it for being such a brat (since she was fine in the end) but when it happened, I was just like "OH SHIT I FUCKING KILLED MY SISTER"

Going to stay in a hotel only to be found out that it is mostly deserted. And this wasn't just a hotel, it's was one of those "MEGA GIGANTIC WATERPARK RESORTS" that families usually go to, only that the waterpark has closed down, the swimming pool was full of alage and only a small (try miniscule) section of the hotel has lights on.

I prayed in the car for about ten minutes before coming out. Oh, and it was nighttime.

Slipped on the ice last December. I broke and dislocated my ankle, so my foot was pointing nearly 180 from where it was supposed to point. I'm in pain, I don't see anyone around, but I'm still lying in the middle of the street, praying I don't get run over while I call the ambulance.

Short answer: Family tragedy at a beach at the south of my country. My mom, little brother and cousin almost drowned.

I was 14 and had no training. Only a cheap bodyboard, and knew how to swim. I managed to take my brother and cousing back to the safety of the beach, but they wouldn't let me go back to the water and take out my mom. The waves were huge. The current didn't want me to move in any way I wanted. But I was able to save two out of three.

(It was a beach with no lifeguard, being in the south. In the end, firemen saved my mom.)

I work as a maid in a hotel during the summer.
While cleaning their room, two drunk guests (very tall, imposing guys) started making propositions and talking dirty to me. One of them even got naked and they wouldn't let me get to the door to ask for help. I was considering fighting my way out when their friends showed up.
Thankfully they were sober and controlled the other two so that I could get out of there, but I shiver to think what could have happened.
From that day on, if the guests are inside, I keep my broom with me at all times and refuse to even come inside if I they are drunk. I've got in trouble with my bosses for doing that but fuck them, they don't pay me enough to risk it.
