Re: heritage?

Ugh, immigration. My country is also arguing about a lot right now [though I doubt it's the same one, based on a couple things you said] but it's...kind of silly. Thankfully, the local bit I live in has been arguing about it for so long it's basically gotten to the point everything's been said and mostly left at that so we don't get too much of it on a day to day basis.

That said, I don't think 'reasons of fate' is really a huge part of why people worry about a culture/whatever, so much as a feeling of 'These are my people, this is our history, our traditions. It's part of who we, as a people, are and we don't want to lose that.' At least, where I'm from.

Well, yeah, fate's simplifying it too much. What I meant was something along the lines of "I was raised in this environment by these people, and it's part of me as much as I'm accepted as part of it".

I think not wanting to lose a shared history and traditions is good, just that I'm wary of some people who try to do that by (what comes across as) looking down on or villifying those who don't have an agenda or power to erase said history and traditions. That and "hey, back in the day we had less sanitation and vital resources, and more crime, but we had a stronger sense of community!" Of course, if anyone actually is trying to erase histories, I'm not for it.

I guess it all just worries me in another way as well because I feel I'm not 'inside' the argument.
