heritage?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I was born in Country A, but never stayed there for long. My family's from Country B, where I spent most of my childhood. I've been living in Country C for a significant amount of time.

Never felt too personally fond of B's culture (for reasons including religion, my personality and having a funny accent in the main language), but I don't bash it. A's is better-known, but really identifying with it would be obnoxious IMO and that of a lot of others.

C's culture is more obviously ethnically mixed and differentiated than the others because of its location and history. Critics of the government say that it sacrificed too much local heritage for the sake of the economy, such as through some language/education policies, urbanisation/construction of certain stuff and by allowing "too many" foreign residents, making the local-born lose out. Some (not necessarily against immigration) also say the current commonly-defined "culture", which the government promoted and some locals (incl. some critics) want to protect, is rather artificial.

Now, I agree with some of those points to varying extents, but not completely, because:
a) economic achievements, guys, you'd have way less geopolitical say if not for those, if you stop now, who knows what'll happen. And quality of living is relatively good, though the costs could be worked on
b) the anti-immigration stuff can sound xenophobic sometimes (what'd you expect)

But because a lot of it deals with, you know, feeling like you're really part of somewhere for reasons of fate in addition to comfort, I feel a bit lost.

tl;dr: not in touch with heritage/didn't really adopt one, just wanted to say it anon

Ugh, immigration. My country is also arguing about a lot right now [though I doubt it's the same one, based on a couple things you said] but it's...kind of silly. Thankfully, the local bit I live in has been arguing about it for so long it's basically gotten to the point everything's been said and mostly left at that so we don't get too much of it on a day to day basis.

That said, I don't think 'reasons of fate' is really a huge part of why people worry about a culture/whatever, so much as a feeling of 'These are my people, this is our history, our traditions. It's part of who we, as a people, are and we don't want to lose that.' At least, where I'm from.

Well, yeah, fate's simplifying it too much. What I meant was something along the lines of "I was raised in this environment by these people, and it's part of me as much as I'm accepted as part of it".

I think not wanting to lose a shared history and traditions is good, just that I'm wary of some people who try to do that by (what comes across as) looking down on or villifying those who don't have an agenda or power to erase said history and traditions. That and "hey, back in the day we had less sanitation and vital resources, and more crime, but we had a stronger sense of community!" Of course, if anyone actually is trying to erase histories, I'm not for it.

I guess it all just worries me in another way as well because I feel I'm not 'inside' the argument.

... C sounds a lot like Singapore. Unless I'm way off base and there's another country out there that's pretty much exactly like Singapore, heh.

I don't know. There's something to be said for having a historical heritage etc, but at the same time, I'm also quite sympathetic towards those who feel in limbo. It's a symptom of globalisation, I think. You get more people who're somewhat ambivalent towards the idea of cultural heritage, just because there's so much exposure to so many other cultural heritages. For some people (myself included) that can lead to feeling less rooted in whatever culture you were predominantly exposed to/felt a connection to. Doesn't mean you're somehow less than those people who do feel a definite attachment to a certain culture. Does that make sense?

Anyway, you're not alone is what I was attempting to say. =P

Yep, you're right! Probably pretty obvious to anyone who knows about its current situation.

Like you said, globalisation's making exposure to several cultures more common in a lot of places, but at the same time ecomomic uncertainty tends to make people more protective of their "own", which is worrying for me and others.

Sometimes I do feel like not being particularly attached to one culture makes my opinion on these matters less credible because maybe I don't understand things fully, but I also feel like I might be seen as putting on airs for being fortunate enough to have a supposedly wider perspective.

Anyway, I've never really expressed these things to anyone irl, so commenting here made me feel a bit better. Thanks, both of you :)
