Pretty much, yeah. Good plots are a bonus for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
This is me, too, honestly. If I like the canon I don't have all that much need for genfic Interestigly enough, I occasionally get genfic plot-bunnies and write them, but I don't often seek it out myself.

You say that like the two things are mutually exclusive...

... but you clearly want well-written and in-character stuff, so you're pretty much in the same boat. Your genre is just different.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

Besides, it's fanfiction. You don't have to get invested in really big plots or whatever. Enjoy what you want. Personally, I rarely like huge plotlines in fic myself. I like short, fluffy things that keep me smiling all day. You could make an argument that we pretty much enjoy things along the same lines.

Well, strictly speaking, PWP with a good plotline is kind of a self-contradiction.

It doesn't make you a shitty fan. There's a million ways to be a fan. You clearly like the source material and care about it so you're a fan. Boom.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I *write* fic just to get off, nonny, so don't worry. You're not alone. :)

Dude, there's not enough porn out there, imo. Not complaining, I do love a good gen story, but most of the time? Yeah, I'm with you. And I'm not ashamed.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I just think it makes you a different type of fan. Sometimes I go through phases where I want epic plotty fic and sometimes I just want PORN. It's just how you enjoy the fandom. so *shrug* don't worry about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
There's not much of a difference between this and reading fic for the catharsis, is there? Do fandom however you want.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep.

I often skip through Big Bangs for the porn bits.

The internet is for porn, okay?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. I keep a bookmark for my fandom's AO3 page filtered to show only fic rated explicit, and the good stuff out of there is all I read. There just isn't anything I want to see that badly in fic except the characters getting it on.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I'm curious, I've heard reading fic to actually get off isn't too common? is that right, f!s? I do it, so idk.

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I used to be all "whelp, read a shameless pornfic, better read some plotty stuff to be a respectable fandom inhabitant!", but later I've come to realise there's no point in consuming fanfic unless it gives me the kind of instant gratification I want (=wank material).

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
While I don't actually get off while reading, usually when I go looking for fic it's to get hot and have a nice memory for later.

Sometimes I go looking for gen and stuff, but mostly I just look for porn. I usually feel pretty fulfilled by the source material, so all I really need is porn.

This is pretty common, I think. I often want plotty fic without smut, but at other points I just want smut. No shame in liking either of those things.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
nope, I usually just want smut. Now I don't mind a long plotty fic if it's got my ship in it, but I might leave it for a while to find PWP nastiness and then come back later sometimes.

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-04-08 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I loveeeeeeee long plotty (romance) fic but I also love smut. In just about any instance if you asked me, "Do you want porn with that?" I would say, "Yes, please!" So...no shame.

Actually, lately I've been looking for more porn fic and IT SEEMS SO RARE. :( (At least for the pairings I ship.) It's a bummer, dude.

Really though, you like what you like and it doesn't matter if that's long plotty fic or pure smut, that's fine. (And either way there are others out there who share your taste.)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not very interested in in-universe stuff unless it's PWP. Long AU/crossovers are fine as long as there's at least one good sex scene. It gets pretty awkward having conversations with IRL friends about fanfic, because I can't bring myself to admit that I only read it for the porn.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely not alone. I get really disappointed if there isn't a lot of sex, and I have a friend who won't even read anything that isn't labeled nc-17. The source is the place for plot. I read fic for porn. As someone else already said, good plot is a bonus.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Look at the hit counts for porn vs gen. In most fandoms that I've been in, M fics have far more hits than anything with a lower rating. As someone who writes mostly gen, this disappoints me because no matter how hard I work, the only thing that gets more readers is adding porn.

In some fandoms, I read exclusively gen, and porn for it kind of irks me when I see it. In some fandoms, I read nothing BUT porn, and gen kind of irks me when I see it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh God did I write this in my sleep?

YANA anon, not at all
