Not all of the companions of the Doctor are self ritious. Look at Sarah Kingdom-she killed her brother when ordered too. No questions just did.

Ace also liked to blow things up.

perhaps some classic who would fit the bill?

OMG, Classic Who. I tried, I really did, but I just couldn't. The first two seasons just about killed me out of boredom. I skimmed through a few more episodes before I finally just skipped to the last season and called it.

*Shakes head* I'll maybe give it another shot in a few years or so (when i'm older, basically), but for now I'll stick to New Who.

oh, well, there's your problem! The first seasons are definitely the slowest and most different--back then it was mostly supposed to be an edutainment type deal, travel through history looking at stuff! and only later did the sci-fi mythology start to get more detailed.

In my books, the best way is to watch the first ep of each Doctor (as an introduction) and then at least one or two serials for him, either most recommended or the ones with summaries that interest you the most. There isn't a lot of continuity between different serials, so other than going "Oh, when did this companion come in and where's so-and-so?" there won't be much confusion.

NAYRT, but uh...could you rec me a few? I've watched all of Seven and Ace's episodes, and a few of Three (omg, Inferno = best thing evaaaaar) but haven't seen any of the others yet. Have seen a lot of clips and scenes on youtube, but I've had trouble getting hooked on many of the full ones. I tried to watch City of Death because I heard a lot of praise for it, but it was so sloooow I couldn't keep watching. What you say about watching the first ep of each incarnation sounds good, I'll try that, but...other than those, what would be good for a poor ADHD-afflicted modern TV watcher like me?

Woo, golly. Well, it depends what you like, really! Like, I have a bit of the ADHD modern sensibility, but I can enjoy Two's often slow-paced eps because Pat Troughton is the perfect Doctor for me. From his era I love Mind Robber (which is rather silly and bottle-episode-y, but I love all the character stuff. "Your leader will be very angry with you if you kill me! *petulantly* I'm a genius....") and Tomb of the Cybermen (which has lolzy 60s BBC sfx, but I love the atmosphere of it): lots of people love the War Games serial, but it's too big for me and I don't like sad endings....

Three wasn't much my style, so I don't have many recs for him...

Four has the longest run and so the most diversity, I guess. I like Robot, his introduction, in part because the spx are SO TERRIBLE they go out the other end of the cheese-spectrum and become spectacular. I love his relationship with Sarah-Jane ("This is Miss. Smith, she's my best friend!") so I hava a bias for their eps; I liked Pyramids of Mars and Seeds of Death and The Hand of Fear. I like City of Death, but it is a bit meander-y.

Five is an interesting little chap, again not entirely my cup of tea, but I have enjoyed what I've watched. I think Black Orchid is just a 2-ep serial, so easy to take in; The Five Doctors for the fun of seeing different incarnations interacting. I really like Turlough, that arrogant cowardly little twat, so I'm biased towards stories featuring him. (Five had a very full Tardis!) I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the Five audiobook 'Loups-Garoux'.

Six is not my style, although I like him in the context of the Doctor's overall evolution. I can't remember any episodes from him, sorry!

Seven you say you know, yay!

Eight just had the one tv-movie; it had some of the silly shakey aspects of any incarnation's first ep, but Paul McGann is lovely. His audiobooks are fantastic as well.

calapine@livejournal has posted some good rec lists; she's a classic Who watcher who also likes the new series. I was gonna rec you the tributes made for each Doctor by Babelcolour, but apparently they've all been privated. OTL
