(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)I'm just worried that as I get older, people are going to more and more see me as absurdly old-fashioned for being as private as I am. Or else think that I must have something criminal to hide or something. People already think it's weird that I refuse to have a Facebook... once I'm an old man, younger people will probably find me to be a baffling old curmudgeon. I remember, I was always taught, don't share personal information online! Now it seems to be the norm to do so. But I can't shake the feeling that it's a bad idea.

It's a fake placeholder account though. Everything in it is unreal and I don't do anything with it.
Re: Privacy
(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:45 am (UTC)(link)I'm not comfortable with that, and I resent being forced to compromise my privacy in order to fit in. It would be so, so easy to stalk someone these days.
But apart from not divulging obvious personal information, I'm not sure how to protect my privacy. Knowledge is power; and I suspect in the future a great deal of power will rest with those who know the most about technology.

Sharing too much worries me as well.
I don't like how easy it is to find people. Most people probably won't ever be in a situation where sharing something online comes back to haunt them, but I'm a paranoid fucker so I think about these things. When I was younger I wasn't quite this opinionated about it, but now I find myself more protective of my personal information.
Re: Privacy
(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:52 am (UTC)(link)I'm like you - I don't have a Facebook, either. I did for a few years long ago, but I deleted it once I realized that it's both utterly useless for me and entirely too invasive for my taste. If this makes me old-fashioned, I'm not inclined to care much. I'd rather make it a little more difficult for a monkey with a keyboard to find me.
At the same time...who would want to find me? I mean, identity thieves have enough easy catches to go on, so even if I did put out a bit more information, I'm probably still too much work to steal from. Aside from that, I'm not important or famous or rich or anything - I'm a nobody. And I think a lot of people have that mindset, too, and have simply accepted (consciously or not) that they're just one fish in a huge sea and it's so unlikely that they'd be targeted that they don't see the need to protect their details. Or something. IDK.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 04:35 am (UTC)(link)And then I come home and see the kind of information that just gets spread out everywhere... it's kind of surreal.
