What makes you think he's an insufferable douche? He's always seemed pretty nice and personable in the comment sections.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Read the asks he gets on Tumblr, and he comes off that way. And on Twitter he goes on a lot of rants about things that just... don't need saying?

I also feel like he goes around white-knighting stuff a lot but ~God forbid~ you ever mention it because he'll bore you to tears for six hours explaining why he isn't...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Willis is one of those people who I can't stand for foggy reasons. He comes off as really chill, but after awhile there are comments here and there that just make me doubt. The wording or tone, something off. Just a weird vibe.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, especially about Willis. I wound up having to unfollow him on both Twitter and Tumblr over how he deals with people who disagree with him. There's a mean streak there.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I just unfollowed on Tumblr, it got to me. I'll read the asks he gets about the comic if he posts them on Twitter, because that's really all I wanted anyway... (and his constant bashing of religion really bothered me. I'm not even the most religious person and I was like "Really? You're now the same intolerant person, but on the other side of the spectrum. Stop it, you aren't impressing anyone." )

Agreed. Except I have no interest in Neil at all.

I stopped following Willis awhile back and now stick to just reading his work.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoy Gaiman's writing, but I understand people's criticisms of it or why it doesn't quite work for some people. He's great at crafting characters and coming up with interesting story ideas, but sometimes the execution and narrative does fall a little flat. He also struggles with endings from time to time. I totally agree that both Neil Gaiman and Wil Wheaton would be awesome to hang with at a bar, though! I would chill with either (or both) of them any day.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a lot more common than you think for people not to like Neil Gaiman's writing. Or anything about him at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
A lot more common *now* but back in the day, NG could literally do no wrong.

Then he, y'know, did.

Yeah, I was going to say that we've had several threads here now about people admitting that they don't really like his work. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Slight correction. Wheaton isn't a feminist writer. As a man he is a feminist ally. Men can be allies, but any man demanding he be a feminist is both deluded and an example of why feminism is still relevant.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You misread - Willis is the one OP refers to as the feminist writer.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Slight correction. Willis is the person referred to in the secret as a feminist writer, not Wheaton. Also, feminism is a movement in which anyone can take part and not an actual social group. Claiming a man can't be a feminist is asinine.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
didn't we have a discussion here before of why "feminist ally" is a ridiculous term? Something about "Yes, I support people who support equal treatment, but I don't actually support equal treatment myself."

Personally, I don't see how it helps anybody that we exclude people from being part of a movement for equality on the basis of their gender.

Lol stop. You are the feminist that gives feminists a bad name.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you just... exclude someone from supporting gender equality on the basis of their gender?

You're an idiot. Holy hell.

I think Willis might have Aspergers. It'd explain a lot.

I always thought it was more of a internet persona thing and he's not an actual douche. Granted, I've only seen his "douchiness" on answers from his tumblr, if he's a bigger jerk elsewhere then idk.

Not a huge fan of any of them for various reasons, but given the choice, I'd rather be stuck in an elevator with Gaiman or Wheaton than Willis, tbqh.

Idk. Wilis is the guy that emailed me to make sure I was okay after a dust up in the comments of his comic. He's also the guy that was very nice and understanding when I couldn't get my words out when I saw him at a con.

I can't speak for the first two but Willis, to me, seems like a person who struggles with being intolerant. First he was an intolerant Christian, now he's an intolerant... I'm actually not sure what he is now.

Either way, he was raised in an extreme household and while he may no longer hold their views, the extremism itself hasn't really left him.

At the same time, I said struggles. I think he sometimes realizes this in himself and tries to do the good thing and tries to not be a douchebag. I think he's working on it, essentially. And honestly? That's a lot better than most people. At least he's trying to change. Though he does try my patience at times.
manifold: Heisenberg was here. Maybe. (heisenberg was here)

Eh, Willis is a nice enough guy offline. Just, he really, really, REALLY likes his "YOUR MOM" jokes.

Like, really.

You're going to hear a lot of them.

I've never been afraid to say I don't particularly like Neil Gaiman's writing - a friend of mine hit the nail on the head when she described him as perpetually having fantastic ideas and shitty execution. But that doesn't mean he doesn't seem, as you say, like a person who'd be great to sit down and have a drink with. Rockstar of the geekworld is definitely right.
