As much as I'd love to see that happen, I'm pretty sure copyright law's preventing Fables from being made into anything at this point.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. NBC had it in development for a TV show in 2005, and ABC greenlit it for a pilot back in December of 2008. Both fell through, but apparently they liked the core idea, because now we have "Grimm" and "Once Upon a Time" instead.

Not at all everything used in Fables is public domain rather it's the fact that ABC can do the same thing without paying royalties to Willingham and DC that makes Once Upon a Time a more viable option.

But for the record I'm a fan of both... Fables is on my comic book pull list and Once Upon a Time is one of three shows I can be bothered to give a crap about watching each week. I love Fables for the bad-ass women, and focuses on Mother-daughter, Mother-son relationships, and the winding plot lines... and I like Fables for it's twists on the stories and it's bad-ass and gritty characters.

I'm not sure which Snow I like better to be honest.

At least Once Upon a Time isn't written by a conservative nutjob.

I was curious to see how many comments there would be before one like this. Second comment. Good enough. *chews popcorn*

This conservative nutjob writes a lot more compelling storylines than the writers of OUAT.

I've been reading Fables for 5 years. I gave up on OUAT in the first season. You have Regina and Belle to thank for that.

At least Fables is actually good.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
So? I don't give a shit about the writer's personal agenda. Fables has good characters and an interesting story. That's what matters.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, this. The most disappointing thing about OUAT is that it's just consistently not Fables.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
As a fan of Fables I'm happy that we got OuaT.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The first seventy or so issues (until the fight with the adversary) would have made a great series. But Fables has been steadily losing steam for a while now and I wish that they'd just wrap the series up already.

I gave it up partway through the Mr Dark arc, because...I just didn't care, any more.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I stopped reading around after the time the Adversary was defeated too. Been meaning to getting around to reading the trades but... *shrugs*

Agreed; the series should've ended with the Adversary's defeat. I soldiered on through the Mr. Dark assault (which came out of nowhere--if he was so dangerous when unsealed, why had he never been mentioned before?), but quit shortly after the sequence with Rose taking to bed in depression (implied to be her fault) and Jack...taking advantage. Or maybe it was the ridiculously-plotted fight between Mr. Dark and a suddenly hottified Frau Totenkinder; I don't remember. Point is, it went on too long and it soon became clear that Willingham, in addition to upping the sexism quotient, was simply running out of coherent ideas.

You and everyone else.

I've never read Fables, so I've no opinion on the main secret. Can I just say though, having never seen that OUAT poster before? It's still so weird and so awesome to see a show poster where five of the seven main characters are female. And four of the five are badasses to boot.

I mean, I'm guessing Fables is probably better written, I've no idea. But I still sort of love OUAT for the whole 'women run the show' thing (well, women and Rumple, but that's still a departure).

...I thought that was basically what OUaT is anyway. (You're kidding yourself if you think a licensed TV adaptation of the comic would be much closer...)

Dunno, I like having two interpretations of the same theme rather than two of the same interpretations.

Once is so badly written, and it just keeps getting worse.

Even if it was a version of Fables, that's all it would be - a version. No adaptation is ever completely faithful. At least this way they aren't ruining actual Fables characters.

I made a secret almost exactly like this awhile ago, OP. So needless to say, I completely agree.

There are quite a few things that would have been better. At this point I enjoy it for how terrible it is. Too lazy to not end that sentence with a preposition *sigh*

I remember hearing some where (this could be fandom rumor) that Disney (or ABC) actually bought the rights to "Fable" a long, long time ago, sat on the copyright and let it expire? Or some copyright issues got in the way? IDK, but I swear up and down I read somewhere that OUAT was originally supposed to be Fable but in the long run it didn't work out.
