Show/Book/Movie/Game that was much better than you expected

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
What show, book, movie or game did you expect to hate/not enjoy at all, but were pleasantly surprised by how much you enjoyed it when you read/watched/played it?

Dowton Abbey

I barely have enough time to enjoy the things that look interesting to me so I usually don't even try with things that don't look good to me from trailers/ads/discussion/whatever.

*Downton

(I just find the typo funny, considering all the secrets about think Downton is Downtown)

I wasn't expecting to enjoy Dark Souls.

I love Dark Souls.

Dark Souls is fucking amazing. I am replaying Demon's Souls as we speak and then I'm going to download the DLC for Dark Souls and it's going to be the most amazing marathon of dooooooooom.

I didn't expect to like Teen Wolf at all, since I'm a pretty big fan of the Michael J. Fox movie and a bit of a snob about remakes/reimaginings. The show has a lot of issues, definitely, and it can be cheesy as hell, but I actually find it pretty enjoyable.

The glimpses of its fandom lowered my expectations immensely (sort of like if I'd seen the crazy in Supernatural fandom before watching the show), but I just finished the first season and I can't wait for the second, it's just right up my alley.

Who has so much money they spend it on books or games they expect to hate? And if anyone like that is here, please adopt me?

You don't have to spend money, though? The things that I haven't been jazzed about and ended up liking were generally lent to me by friends.

Vikings. I put it off for a couple of weeks because I thought it might be cheesy or boring, then finally sat down and watched the first episode... and marathoned the rest. And now I'm in love.

Scream 4. Just streamed it on Netflix and it was at least as good as the original

A show (that no one will likely remember) called Terriers. It was just fantastic. It didn't look like something I would be interested in but week after week it got better, and that was the first and last time I've ever written to say 'HEY, DON'T CANCEL THIS SHOW'. Sadly, it didn't help.

Also, Bayonetta. It looked so kooky that I wasn't sure about giving it a chance, but then I played a demo...and it was just insane. Insanely fun, challenging, and incredibly satisfying. I went right out and bought it.

Hell, Halo. There wasn't much out during the original Xbox launch so that lead me to buying it. I was very uninterested at the time, but gave it a shot. Good decision.

The Puss in Boots movie. My friends and I went out of loyalty to Antonio Banderas and nostalgia for my huge middle school crush on him. We were pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was.

(Although even if it had been terrible we still would have had Banderas's voice:P)

Madoka Magica, I knew about all the tragedy, and saddness it had way before hand, and I really don't go for that kind of thing stuff. I am so glad I decided to give it a try anyway. ♥

Shadow of the colossus, I still suck so badly at it, but I love it so much.

Supernatural. Looked like the shittiest kind of American TV, complete with vapid pretty people and cheesy mythology fuckpie. Watched some random episodes from the 4th season just because I found Misha Collins really hot. Started wondering about all of the other characters and the interesting-looking flashbacks.

Went back to the pilot, found a beautifully-shot, well-written show with magnetic, three-dimensional characters and some of the best angst I've ever experienced.

Aaaand about a month later I had an account on LJ and was publishing fanfiction (I've never written fanfic before).

Elementary. I'm a Holmes fan, and I actually loved them making Watson a woman (and an Asian-American woman, at that), but I still wasn't sure if I'd like the show... by the end of epsiode one, I was hooked. (-:

without a doubt, The Hangover. Mainly because I haaaaate Zach Galifianakis. But it was great. Can't bring myself to watch The Hangover 2, though.

Star Trek: TOS. About half-way through the novel Redshirts, by John Scalzi (which I really need to finish), it occurred to me that I would probably enjoy it even more than I already did if I watched the show it was drawing influence from. So the other day I finally sat down, opened up Netflix and fell in love with the show in the space of two episodes. Yes, it's cheesy. Yes, it's a product of its time. Yes, it's flawed, but it's also just so goddamn charming. Granted, I'm only just now starting on episode four after being thoroughly creeped out (but in the way that they were clearly aiming for, so it's all good) by Charlie X, but somehow I don't think my opinion will change. And let's face it: I like Voyager. If Threshold didn't turn me off of Trek, then honestly, what can?

I went into The Avengers going 'eh, superhero movie, should be mildly entertaining at best' and came out going 'I HAVE TO GO AND SEE ALL THE MARVEL MOVIES NOW IS IRON MAN ON TV ANY TIME SOON DOES THIS MOVIE HAVE A KINKMEME.'

Homestuck!

I expected it was gonna be stupid as hell and I would hate it, but it turned out to be really fun and charming to read, as well as constructed and told in an incredibly creative way.

Mine are older examples, but I remember thinking I would dislike Dark Angel, Firefly, and Harry Potter before I gave them tentative test runs. Now I wish I could play in those universes FOREVER.

The Avengers. Funnily enough, I can't remember why I didn't expect to enjoy it, because I am a superhero comics fan and was a big fan of the Avengers comics and I had watched and enjoyed all the prequel movies.

But I remember that I had not read a single pre-release thing about it or watched a single trailer and was basically completely un-jazzed. Hell, the part of it I was most interested in was that Cobie Smulders was in it. IDEK, there must have been some reason I was so apathetic, but I was askjfhdksjfhjding when I came out so...*shrug*
