You sound like you're
a.) not from Scandinavia
b.) not from Europe in general
c.) a little whiny ("why can't XYZ cater more to ME?")

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
so much this!

I'm so tired of this whining of a random american person that can't understand the joke, and goes "you're doing it wrooong!" lol no, if you lack cultural context, that doesn't make joke bad, it just makes it not aimed to you.

Yeah pretty much. Just because you don't get a joke about Scandinavia doesn't mean it's a bad joke - it just means you don't know much about Scandinavia. I mean, it's two steps away from "I don't like foreign films because they're all talking gibberish and the dialog has to be explained in the subtitles. If you have to explain it, it's no good!"

If it's scandinavian joke for scandinavian people, why not show it in scandinavia in scandinavian language, instead of broadcasting it in english for everyone to see, and to not understand it?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Um.

Because some people find the jokes interesting as well as funny?

I know more about Scandinavia from reading the explanations, and am a better person for knowing more than the world outside my front door.

Which of the Scandinavian languages did you have in mind? There is more than one? English seems a pretty good compromise since it too is a Northern European language, and it is pretty commonly taught in schools all over Europe. And Canada. And Lower Canada too. And possibly also Australia, but since they also talk about Goobering a Majhooli and Chundering a Wazza, I can't quite be certain.

Because "Scandinavian language" in this context is at least five different languages, one of which isn't even related to the rest, and even the other four's speakers have difficulties understanding each other. Usually I can get the gist of most texts in written Danish (spoken Danish is incomprehensible to me, though), but SATW would probably contain too much slang for anyone not Danish to get it.

As for "showing it in Scandinavia ... instead of broadcasting it ... for everyone to see", it's a webcomic. It's not like we have our own Internet over here ...

You don't know about the special Scandinavian internet? Or our special common language*? Shame on you Swede, shame on you!

*Though English is our common language, I used to date a Swede once upon a time and we spoke English to each other, mostly because my accent is hard to understand for Norwegians... And I have trouble understanding Swedish if it isn't "television" Swedish.

Oh shit, Swedes aren't supposed to know, you guys did the most stupid thing on the earth when you gave us our independence and lost out on all that shiny oil money so you don't get to take a part in our awesome Scandinavian internet, we prefer the Finns over you guys so...

I'm just kidding dear, you know you will always be our favourite country to buy bacon, candy, alcohol and cigarettes in!

And at least we vote for you guys in Eurovision! Even if you guys totally left us in the dust last year! yup I might not have forgiven you guys for that yet...

This Finn thanks you for pointing out that Finnish is not, in fact, a Scandinavian language and though most of us understand Swedish, Norwegian and Danish are a bit of a no-go.

Same reason we put subtitles or dubs on movies, or translate books. Some of us aren't so very dull-minded and stupid, as to be unable to enjoy media about subjects more foreign than the neighbor two blocks down the road. Some of us even go further and actually are somewhat familiar with the rest of the world, and some people have even lived in those countries. It's not a "Scandinavian joke for Scandinavian people," it's a Scandinavian joke for anyone familiar with Scandinavia, complete with an explanation for the people who aren't familiar with Scandinavia, but also aren't so insular that they consider the whole of Western Europe to be an obscure subject.

And why not English? It's the Lingua Franca that the most people will understand.

I was not aware there was one Scandinavian language? Or that it was possible to post something online and just let Scandinavians read it.

Thank you for you great insight into my small part of the world, which I am sure you know a lot more about than I do! And I didn't know I could only use English when I want nonscandinavians to understand me, I shall remember to always speak in Scandinavian when I talk about stuff you might not understand.

And this is a general disclaimer to everyone who think Scandinavians understand each other: FUCK YOU! Norwegian and Swedish is a lot more different than American and British English and you guys complain about not understanding each other!

You know that a lot of people born in the fifties and sixties learned Swedish from watching Swedish telly, right? You know that "understanding" Danish is largely a matter of distinguishing words when you hear it spoken? You know that there are languages in this world with dialects that are miles further apart than Swedish, Danish and Norwegian are? You do know that the existence of three separate Scandinavian languages is a political definition, not a linguistic one? It's not like it is very difficult to read any of them, what with them having 80% of the vocabulary and 95% of the grammar in common.

I'm sorry for being catty, but this whole thread makes me want to bang my head against a wall somewhere. It gets like that when a native speaker of a Scandinavian language claims that the other two are omg so incomprehensible.

I assume you know Swedish/Danish and Norwegian then? Since you know more about this than someone who you know grew up in one of those countries, lived in another one (and goes shopping there at least once a year) and spent ever fucking Summer holiday in the third...

Also Norwegian television show both Swedish and Danish shows basically every day, I understand both languages when they talk in "television Danish/Swedish" it is when you mix in all our accents it gets difficult (as in my accents is hard to understand for southerners and I almost need subtitles when it comes to some Norwegian accents).

My friend told me about one of her trips to Denmark where she went to a McDonalds and two of the workers spoke English to each other, because apparently their accents was too far apart for them to easily understand each other.

And tell if you think Swedish and Danish is so easy to read, you should try reading some of the books and articles I got as required reading in Uni, heck I have to use a dictionary to understand all of it.

And my example was British English and American English, not every language on this planet, so I don't get why you are bringing up other languages, and I would also like to have some examples of these languages (honestly, I am curious because I didn't know this, and I like learning new things).

Wow that got long... I shall stop writing now

I seriously adore you right now. :)
