Pretty much all of the heroines in Miyazaki films have short hair! (Which I never noticed until now, but is pretty cool.) And Miyazaki does good fantasy.

In books: Segnbora, the main female character in Diane Duane's "Tale of the Five" novels, has hair that's cut to shoulder-length because "she wants people to know she's a woman but she doesn't have the patience for braids." (A quote I have memorized because it stuck out to me! Short hair = feminine is indeed rare in standard fantasy.) She's a shieldmaid/warrior, but that's not considered unfeminine in her culture.

I was going to suggest Nausicaa but she ... is sort of a warrior character. Though she's still very feminine and gentle. Overall a complex well-written character since you can't exactly shoehorn her into either of those tropes!

Nausicaa and Mononoke are both sort of feminine-ish warrior types, it's true, but the girls from Spirited Away and Ponyo and Kiki's Delivery Service and Totoro aren't particularly! (Though they are a bit younger and less high fantasy.)

...really, the problem is just as much finding *any* active female character in high fantasy who focuses on traditionally feminine stuff more than warrioring Even a lot of the long-haired ones are warriors, as OP noticed in her secret.)

I feel like Nausicaa would've been pretty feminine all around if she wasn't put into the position she was in, she seemed like a Princess Bubblegum type who just wanted to science all day (and maybe spend time outside appreciated nature) if people hadn't invaded her kingdom and started the events that are the basis for the entire story -- but that would've been boring

Yeah, and even the way she ended up saving the kingdom was about femininity rather than fighting (although I'm working mostly from the manga, it's been a v. long time since I saw the movie.)

Well, and now this secret has me realizing -- Kushana has long hair and she's not very feminine and is the typical "warrior woman" fantasy character (though she keeps it braided)

The movie is pretty good but the ending is really abrupt and it gets compressed at the end, mostly because (I think) Miyazaki hadn't finished the manga yet at that time. Either that or just because it's hard to fit all that story into a movie. It kinda sucks because I liked Kushana and Kurotowa and the Torumekians but they get shafted for time

The soundtrack to that movie is the best, unlike other Jo Hisaishi soundtracks, it's heavy on synth -- and it seems like the synth music is used in the scenes with the Ohmu and the miasma-filled forests and stuff, as opposed to general traditional orchestration in the scenes that take place in the Valley and such

I haven't finished the manga, I want to but... just haven't
