They're kids' books. The theories and universe were poorly constructed. There is no unifying Tolkien-esque background, nor are there any profound truths to be found inside. They're fun. They brought us some batshit fandom LOLs. People need to stop trying to find deeper meaning to them.

This. Harry Potter was entertaining, but the hype over it being the best book series ever created is ridiculous.

Yeah. I'm totally a fan, but I definitely wince at some of the more obvious epicycles JKR added - like having Neville call himself 'all-Muggle for ages' to clumsily hide the existence of Squibs until CoS because it becomes a minor plot point for Argus Filch's fear; given how cleverly she's hidden other things and managed to generate whole planets of Epileptic Tree wanking amongst fans, it smacks of incompletely considered worldbuilding.

I'm sorry, could you explain what you mean by "epileptic tree"? I googled the term but since I never watched Lost, I'm afraid I'm a bit confused by the definitions I've found.

It's a term that loosely means "extreme proliferation of fandom meta theories over the smallest of things in canon".

Thank you!

Not to mention Quidditch is the stupidest game, ever.

Oh god. If you don't like Harry Potter, fine, but for the love of all good things, could we stop deifyng fucking Tolkien.

Well, the difference is that Tolkien purposefully went for more or less complex messages. JKR probably has to say a thing or two against racism, but there's nothing biggger than that in her books. And this is not bad; in itself the fact does not make her worse than Tolkien (although I would say that he's better in regard to writing technique), it's just the way things are.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
... against racism? What?

The hatred of some wizards for muggles is barely veiled metaphor for racism. Or xenophobia in general.

How the fuck did you miss that?

Dude, lol, the ideas of racism and racial purity are important themes in every single book.

He's not a deity, but he had a very extensive and cohesive backstory to his world. More than was needed, really, but face it, he's the standard for creating your alternate fantasy/sci-fi world.

Yours, maybe. Enjoy your telephone directory.

This. I love Harry Potter; I love Lord of the Rings. (Actually, I hate the book series of Lord of the Rings, but I love Middle Earth and everything to do with it.) Tolkien is not the fucking be-all end-all of fantasy.

Yup, this.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
Your lack of reading comprehension does not mean the series has no deeper meaning. It's full of meaning and pround truths, and a lot of it isn't even that difficult to parse.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
People who disagree with you about how meaningful and profound a children's book is do not lack reading comprehension.

There is not a single point in Harry Potter that isn't obvious and that hasn't been made before. It is not "deep;" it is simple and trite. You want it to be something that it is not, and you're getting overly defensive about it.
