Thats icky, but unsurprising. That is still the majority thought in this worldl, even among people who otherwise are positive about independence ('go ahead and do what you want as long as you've got the 2.5 before it's too late!' Or 'once you have one you'll understand!'). An older British lady thinks that way? Must be a day that ends in Y. I'm kind of surprised you were shocked enough to lose respect. You can tell from the books she's a fan of the happily ever after and the big happy family.
That said, you are reaching reallllly far with that reading of those characters. There are things to criticise about what some of the characters represent but this is not one of them. I think you are projecting cause the fact that they have that in common is not something the many people would notice without really looking for it. Not to mention, I think only Bellattix of your 3 examples is accurate. McGonagal is never portrayed in anything but a positive light, and the point of Trelawney was she was right all along. When Umbridge got in her face we were meant to sympathise.

If JK wanted to punish child free women, we'd have all picked that up long ago. She's not the most subtle.

As for your rl problem op, I'd tell you not to care but that's not easy i know. I flip flop between wanting them and not wanting them, those who have a problem with it I say things like 'so will you raise them for me' on the jokey end and 'I don't tell you how to live your life or that your children was a mistake don't tell me about mine' ion the serious end.

The truth is child wank won't amount to anything the way other shame issues do like gay rights which also affect me so this you must have kids mentality is annoying but not worth tears.

Okay ....all JKR said was that motherhood was important and people who aren't mothers can't understand what motherhood is like.

What part of that is "icky" exactly? She didn't say anything against people who don't have children or how its wrong not to have children so I don't see what's "icky".

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I can see how that can be thought of as being condescending. Because what may be implied (not saying it is) is that 'you can't understand how much you sacrifice and how important you are by selfishly giving up all your time to raise your child'.
I do not have or want kids but I say I CAN understand what motherhood is like. I have been a caregiver most of my life. I have also raised numerous pets that I love as my 'children'. I have gotten up at midnight to tend to the sick, know what it is like to give up time and even dreams for the welfare of someone else. I know EXACTLY what motherhood feels like.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. No.

I thought I knew what motherhood was like. I've been in childcare since I was seventeen, I practically raised my own siblings because my parents were out working. We had pets and we took care of those too.

And absolutely NONE of that is comparable to actually being a mother to your own child.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's not condescending, it's fact.

I can read all I want about being a British nanny in the 19th century but I'm hardly going to know exactly what it's like regardless. Because I don't have the experience of it.

I don't know what it's like to be Greek, I don't know what it's like to be a musician, I don't know what it's like be an archaeologist. Simply because I've never been any of them. Taking similar experiences and assuming that they give me the proper understanding of what it's like being Greek, or musician or an archaeologist is just silly, becuase it's not.

There are plenty of sacrifices to be made without having children or pets or being a carer, so that doesn't mean you understand what motherhood is like.

Yeah, no. It's not condescending, it's a fact. Having a pet is not the same as having a child. Taking care of your siblings is not the same as having a child. Being a teacher or a nurse is not the same as having a child. The only thing that's like having a child is having a child.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
No, you don't.

You know enough to emphasize to a certain extent, but you don't know what it's like when it's *your* KID. Not your pet. Raising pets is nothing like raising a child all the way to adulthood.

Ayrt

Having reread what she said, I take back calling it icky. It is true that people that aren't mothers don't get what it's like to be one. I misread it as the usual you are only saying no to kids cause you dont get it but that isn't what she said after all. I guess you're on your own with that one op
