The skin color of your personal video game characters does not affect anyone.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of my Sims are fandom characters. Most of my fandoms are full of white people. It recently dawned on me that a lot of characters are single, so I wound up giving them all black spouses, and now it's my own personal headcanon whenever I watch shows...

Heh, that's cute!

Probably 90% of my Sims are fandom characters and a lot of those are white too, but I do have characters of other races. (The spouse thing I did for Lestrade from Sherlock. I usually pair my fandom characters up with each other, but that's a neat idea.)

That's how I started playing The Sims. I had Sailor Moon characters and Zelda characters. They would have romances, dammit.

Eh. I can't get too worked up about this. Side-eyeing you over the "looks weird" part, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I've never played any Sims games, but depending on the base bodies (and faces) they're given, I think I get what they were trying to say. The common facial features for people of African ancestry are different than those of the average Caucasian, so if the Sims sprites (idk what they're called) have more typically "white people" features, using dark skin tones might look more like an odd palette-swap than like an actual black person. Certainly once you have people of mixed ancestry, all bets are off, but I think that was what the OP was trying to say.

Unless the Sims games let you change out the facial features of your Sims, in which case I have no idea.

I don't think this is something to feel guilty about. I know some people who have all of their characters looking like, essentially, different versions of their self. It's just pixels.

Get over it. It doesn't make you racist. Stop concern-trolling yourself.

Man...I hate trying to make black characters in any semi-realistic video game character creator that doesn't just give you 5 choices of skin tone.

I don't know why, but, despite the fact they can make the canon black characters look like real people, for some reason, I can never find a skin tone option in the character generator that even vaguely approximates the skin tone of someone of African ancestry. It's either too red, too ashen, or look more like a brown crayon than real skin.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear you on the brown crayon. It's like darker skin's hard to render without making it look like wax. WHY??? Why do they do this?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
And the faces are still very "white features". Like, no, unless there's a white ancestor very, very far back in this characters history, will they ever have a nose or jawline like that.

The engines themselves for most video games are built for shading lighter skin, or so I'm told. Dragon Age had some of the worst. The darkest skins were purple.

aren't there mods or meshes or something you could download? if it bugs you that much, i mean.

[personal profile] thren 2013-04-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Most of my sims are white, they're easier to see. My sim world has no mixed marriages, because I hate that the kids will usually turn out one or the other instead of something in the middle.

The beautiful thing about Sims is that they're just pixels. You're not hurting anyone by making white sims.

Does that dude deliberately look like Henry Townshend? Because god damn

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking Murphy Pendleton but uhhhh...same difference, I guess >.>

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the same thought. That looks exactly like Henry... well except the sim has a facial expression...

Yeah, I can definitely understand that. I try to vary the races of my Sims (not that race exists in the game, but you know) because variety is the spice of life and all, and because even if nobody else knows what mine look like, I'll know.

I haven't really had too much trouble making non-white Sims in particular not look weird? Maybe you could try looking at some of the non-white premades in CAS and seeing where their face sliders are.

Of course, whenever I play several generations of a household, the descendants of the ones I create always seem to end up being ambiguously brown regardless.
bored_bitch: (Garrus_dungiveafuck)

[personal profile] bored_bitch 2013-04-18 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of my "single female in household" Sims have pale skin, because they're at least partially influenced by my own appearance and I have really pale skin.

I've also had a few crayon black (as in the color black, not the skin tone black) females that had a fantasy quality to them.

Households with more than a few people are generally a free-for-all, unless I want them to share genetics because of relations. Guys are also a free-for-all.

But the largest demographic in my Sim towns is apparently paper white goth chicks.

Huh, I'm the opposite, somehow all my game characters end up some shade of deep brown, when possible. I hate it when in any game, I push the slider aaalll the way to the end and get some dude with a gentle tan, argh. Anyway, the point of a game is to roll with whatever you like looking at, yeah? The realism police will have to pry my dark-skinned redheads from my cold dead fingers.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Dark skinned redheads exist though! (Excellent next-gen or raceswaped Weasley fan-casts have some very, very attractive dark skinned redheaded actors and actresses.)

Hmm, I get what you're saying. My three core sims are all light-skinned though I am marrying them to sims of varying shades. But the darkest shade in Sims 2 doesn't look... right? I don't know how else to explain it. It doesn't bother me enough to change it and modding skin shade messes with genetics so I'll just have to live with it.
ext_18500: My non-fandom OC Oraania. She's crazy. (Default)

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2013-04-18 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
I end up with most of my sims being white too. I don't let it bother me, that's just how I see the characters (most of the ones I am now playing are characters from my own personal headcanon).

*Points at icon* Say hello to Oraania, she's one of my favourites.

Barring one deliberately brown black guy who was actually vaguely based on Rude from FF7 (who frankly I think does not have a very African face - he's got a very sharp nose), most of my black characters are ~black~.

As in Drow.

I also now have a couple of werewolves in the CAS library that have dark, almost black, grey skin. They're meant to look evil.

Chalk it up to personal preferences. I know I just like to play white characters, and I'd be offended if someone decided to tell that made me racist. I don't do it for any reason other than maybe being drawn more to faces like my own.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I play TS2, but I usually go looking for CC skintones and face templates so they look a little more natural consistently cartoony, no matter what they are. It makes me feel like I have a little more leeway with technical accuracy.
