That's funny, to me the fandom seems to be overrun with Thorin/Bilbo, and Fili/Kili is like a distant second. I'm not a huge fan of it but I'd love to see more if it meant less Bagginshield, which I loathe.

And I haven't noticed as many modern AUs about them as a lot of other pairings seem to get, and that alone is good enough for me. I would take fucktons more Fili/Kili fics over one more modern AU of my favorite rare pairing.

Yeah, I would actually take more Fili/Kili if it meant less modern AU. Maybe I made a secret about the wrong thing. :|a I guess I'm just full of hatred for a lot of things in this fandom (although I don't actually hate Fili/Kili, I just am tired of it seeming to be in the background of every fic I read).

What is your favorite rare pairing?

I can totally understand your frustrations with Bagginshield because I feel so many writers completely ruin any potential the ship has by writing Thorin as a controlling jerkass and Bilbo as completely spineless. However, there are some really well written Bagginshield fics out there if you ever want to give the pairing a chance again....

Alas, I do miss the days when Bofur/Bilbo was more popular.

I don't recall having seen any fics but now that you mention it, I really want to read some! (and it should be popular, the two of them are adorable!)

Quick scan of AO3, and there don't seem to be any Balin/Bilbo fics there, although I'm sure there's something in the kink meme. There's some Balin/Dwalin and Balin/Dori and a couple other random pairings, but Balin in any pairing seems pretty rare. From a book standpoint, it makes a lot of sense, and they interact enough in the film that it makes sense there too, so it's a shame it seems it's not being written much!
