OP here. I guess maybe I would, but I'm not interested in having a new fandom right now. I'm happy in the one I'm in.

Also, I haven't watched the movies, but I'm not fond of superhero fandoms. I've tried Batman, Spider-Man, et cetera.... It just doesn't do it.

So... you made no effort to follow your friends at all? I mean, even if you said "nope, not for me" it seems like you went out of your way to insure the relationship would end.

Granted, i like superhero movies, but the marvel series is a lot better then the first three spider mans and all of the batmans in my opinion.

I agree with the comment about Marvel. They are just so much fun.

Wow, if they don't like it they don't like it. No sense in trying to force something upon themselves something that they already know that they don't like.

Um, but they don't know that they don't like it. They've never seen it.

Think of it this way: if someone hates spicy food, they probably aren't going to make a special exception for one particular spicy food that contains the same spicy ingredient as all the other spicy foods they hate.

But if someone hates spicy foods and all their friends really really want to go to a curry place, are they going to just stay home instead of going out to dinner with them?

I mean, just because it's a style of cooking known for its spiciness, that doesn't mean that's all there is to it. At least they could have some naan bread. (For the purposes of this analogy, let's say the naan bread is pretty people--pleasant enough for the majority of the folks in question, whatever your tastes.)

But the friends in the example are not going out for dinner to a curry place one in a while, but every day. I agree, OP could just try it once, and see if they find something they enjoy about it. But otherwise, naan starts tasting a little bland after a while, even in good company.

Sure, and that's a problem if that's what happens. But no one's getting on OP's case for being tired of naan. OP didn't even go into the restaurant.

Think about it this way, OP.

If you found something you really enjoyed and wanted to share with your friends and they shit all over it, would you want to hang around and listen to them mock/deride/bitch about the thing you like?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa. Nowhere does OP imply he/she publicly shits on this film or bitches about it to friends.

Re: OP

I think dazzledfirestarter is butthurt that someone doesn't like their fandom.

Re: OP

I'm not interested in having a new fandom right now. I'm happy in the one I'm in.

I never really understood this sentiment... Yeah, I understand that a new fandom can be all-consuming for a while, but it's possible to be invested in multiple fandoms at the same time... It's not like you have to completely abandon your old fandoms just because you're going through the honeymoon phase with a new one.

I've never figured out how to multi-fandom. I can only invest in one fandom at a time, but I'm an OTP girl, so maybe the two are related? I've been actively fannish for about ten years, but I've only been in two fandoms. But I'm happy where I am and I'm not ready to move on.

Then again, I'm old.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you. I have had one main fandom for years. Don't want another. No interest.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
There's only one show I've been interested enough to fan over. Ever. And I'm old enough to know I'm not going to get invested in another fandom. Not everyone slips in and out of fandoms easily. I have one thing I like and I'll stick with it, thanks. I'm very loyal and really have no desire to stray.

Well that's your problem right there, OP...

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-04-19 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
MCU is so much better than anything DCU has come out with thus far! /pretty biased :P And assuming you're talking about the original Spider-Man movies, those aren't really that good, either (and even if you're talking about the new one, that one is a very different tone than formal MCU).

But in all seriousness, OP, if you really miss your friends, you should give the movie a try - if only to have a thread of commonality connecting to your old friends even if you don't actually join the fandom. You'll at least know what they are talking about, which can be very helpful in staying connected even if you choose not to actually participate. :)

I like superheroes, personally, but I have several friends who are not into superheroes as a general rule but still loved the MCU movies. You could always try giving one of them a shot and if you don't like it, it's 2 hours of your life. Not a huge loss.
