Not OP but yes Hannibal is misunderstood in the sense that he's more nuanced than people give him credit for. I.E. how when he was a psychiatrist he helped a victim of rape and when she killed her rapist he publicly took responsibility for it so she could live her life.

Not to mention his backstory which while it may be hated it's still canon for the character.

If people can act like Loki is a woobie who just needs to be loved and Eric Northman is a halfway decent guy I don't see why Hannibal shouldn't get a little leeway.
darth_eldritch: (Hannibal Rising)

This.

While he is definitely sick and very dangerous, he does have a moral code when it comes to certain things.

... Reasonably fair point regarding fandom's double standards. However, those who propose the misunderstood!Hannibal argument are liable to be many of the same people who propose the woobie!Loki argument as well, so this would be mostly a case of preaching to the choir, while many of those who oppose the one will also oppose the other, so you're not liable to make an effect on those by arguing this.

There will be some divergence, which is where things get sticky and potential double-standards come into play.

There's probably some overlap but you can say Loki is misunderstood without being called a troll.

But can I say that Hannibal has depth while Loki is simply a whiny, boring, wretched psychopath?

Huh? Huh? Can I?

(anon because must of my friends are Loki-positive.)

I'd say canon Loki has a fair bit of depth, between his loss of identity and jumping feet first into galactic conqueror. He's got some nice Shakespearean traits, if you're into that sort of thing. Fanon Loki, on the other hand ... not so much.

You can prefer one over the other personally, no problem. Morally speaking, it's a toss up on whether you think small-scale, personal crime is better or worse than grand scale, impersonal crime. (Is it more twisted to destroy an individual life for the sake of artistry, or callously wipe out thousands just because they happened to be in the way?)

Either way, though, neither of them are exactly people of the year.

Loki's not a cannibal.

Loki's killed more people than Hannibal. Your point?

If people can act like Loki is a woobie...

People can, and people who know better can point and laugh.

Agreed. I think a lot of people just automatically dismiss him as this creature of absolute pure evil omg satan reincarnate that only cares about eating people. He is certainly evil in many ways, but there's so much more to the character. I found him to be one of the most complex characters I've seen in contemporary literature to this day.
