Show your work, OP. How is the cannibal murderer misunderstood?

THIS IS SO LAZY & BORING IT'S NOT WORTHY OF A RATING

[personal profile] trollometer 2013-04-18 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, come on. This is worse than a lack of effort. At least give us some insane explanation regarding why you think he's misunderstood. GIVE US SOMETHING FUN TO WORK WITH.

Of course, he's misunderstood there. He's wearing a mask. Take it off and he'll tell you how much he wants to eat your liver and what wine would go good with it.

It's times like this that I do wish there was a "thumbs up" option on DW.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but yes Hannibal is misunderstood in the sense that he's more nuanced than people give him credit for. I.E. how when he was a psychiatrist he helped a victim of rape and when she killed her rapist he publicly took responsibility for it so she could live her life.

Not to mention his backstory which while it may be hated it's still canon for the character.

If people can act like Loki is a woobie who just needs to be loved and Eric Northman is a halfway decent guy I don't see why Hannibal shouldn't get a little leeway.
darth_eldritch: (Hannibal Rising)

[personal profile] darth_eldritch 2013-04-19 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
This.

While he is definitely sick and very dangerous, he does have a moral code when it comes to certain things.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
... Reasonably fair point regarding fandom's double standards. However, those who propose the misunderstood!Hannibal argument are liable to be many of the same people who propose the woobie!Loki argument as well, so this would be mostly a case of preaching to the choir, while many of those who oppose the one will also oppose the other, so you're not liable to make an effect on those by arguing this.

There will be some divergence, which is where things get sticky and potential double-standards come into play.

If people can act like Loki is a woobie...

People can, and people who know better can point and laugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I think a lot of people just automatically dismiss him as this creature of absolute pure evil omg satan reincarnate that only cares about eating people. He is certainly evil in many ways, but there's so much more to the character. I found him to be one of the most complex characters I've seen in contemporary literature to this day.

I am very, very bad at telling when people are trolling. More often than not, I can tell when they're saying something dumb, but I'm never sure if that's because they mean it to be dumb or because they're dumb.

I could tell that this was a troll secret.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I agree. All those people he ate totally deserved it. They were annoying. And goodness knows, annoying people deserve to die. Have you ever annoyed anyone, OP?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure the unrepentant child molester who raped his sister deserved to have his face cut off and fed to the dogs.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Right! If you haven't been a cannibal or a murderer, how can you possibly understand what it's like?

~Gives you the special misunderstood woobie villain hug.~

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
And yet someone who attempts to commit mass genocide is considered a woobie by most of fandom. *sighs*

I think Hannibal is a wonderfully complex character with a great mind and an interesting sense of humor.

That doesn't take away the fact he's a serial killing cannibal, though.

I think there's this weird trend in fandom to excuse characters' actions because you like them. It's silly. Fucked-up characters can be fascinating, you can love them, but don't go saying how poor and misunderstood they are.
