YES. Not specifically about those games but ugh! I *hate* when people won't back off on stuff after you've said you're not interested.

It's worse when you are interested, but they won't stop pushing it :( I've ended up hating a few things that way. Fuckers.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Honestly, I hate it the most when it's something you're neutral about/thinking of maybe getting into and probably would like...then end up refusing having anything to do with it because the sheer amount of 'YOU MUST WATCH/PLAY/READ THIS!!!11!'

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-04-22 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This! Overselling or pushing something is the fastest way to get me to completely lose interest and even go from interest to haaaaate.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"So I'm thinking about checking this out..."
"OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU HAVEN'T TRIED THAT YET! DO IT NOW! DROP EVERYTHING AND DO IT!"

Quickest way to ruin something.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Especially when they belittle things you DO like in comparison. Like "UGH, you like THAT? That shit sucks, it's terrible and lame I can't believe you like that, you should totally try THIS SHINY AMAZING THING THAT I TOTALLY LOVE OMG YOU NEED TO BE INTERESTED AND LOVE IT LIKE ME forget that shit you like my taste is better"

Eeeyup. So annoying.

Nothing makes me go from 'lack of interest' to 'hatred' like 'don't read that, read this'.

Even though 'readthisreadthisreadthisreadthisreadthis!' can be annoying, it's not near as bad as that.

Shipping? I know Bioshock has a major fanbase, but is shipping a major facet of it?
elaminator: (BioShock Infinite: Elizabeth)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-04-22 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The series does have a lot of fans but I've never seen much of a fandom. At least for the first two games; Infinite seems to be a bit more popular in that regard. (There is a bit of shipping for Infinite, but...again, unless I missed something shipping was rare for the first two games.)

And your friends sound irritating and pushy OP. I don't know what to suggest other than to tell them "Back off", but you've probably tried that.

It's... really not in my experience.

Canon-wise? No. Aside from a few implications of background characters, romance doesn't play much of a part. Fandom is very ship-heavy though and will try to make it work anyway. Lutece twincest is hugely popular right now, and I know a lot of people got angry at the end of Infinite for "ruining their ship" when Bioshock has never been about love stories. Family seems to be a much more important theme in the games.

You know I've never actually had this problem before no matter how much someone tries to tell me how great or terrible something is its never really annoyed me that much. At worst, if they won't shut up about something I just change the topic of conversation. Where the hell are all these people who complain about others shoving things down their throat hanging out.

Seriously nearly every overly obsessed fanboy or girl I've ever met will shut up about their obsession if you ask them nicely or change the subject to something else.

Along the same vein I don't really understand hype aversion either as long as your not being carried away by hype I've never had other people's enthusiasm effect my enjoyment of something. Letting other people's enjoyment or hatred of something effect your own just seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Unrelated to the secret, but I'm no gamer and I have to say my sister's boyfriend try to teach me how to play this game was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. Especially when he'd say "That one's not dead I saw it move!" just to get a laugh out of watching me scream and spend ten minutes beating the monster with a wrench or whatever it was. Never again.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
wow bastard...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
You sound tense. Maybe playing a shooter would help you calm down. Have you tried BioShock? I hear it's pretty good.
elaminator: (Halo 3 : Master Chief - Dual wielding)

OH ANON. I feel guilty for laughing.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you OP, but I worry if sometimes I don't come off this way to my friends. I try not to push stuff on them, but sometimes I just have a really hard time not talking about something I've just finished that left me on a high D:

Though I try to stop if they ask me to, and especially if they're interested and want to avoid spoilers, but my stupid big mouth...

I've ended up no longer being friends with people because they would shove stuff I didn't care for at me saying I had to like it *coughteenwolfcough*

Seriously we can like different things people, it's ok.

[personal profile] antoj 2013-04-23 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
yea that is super annoying. :|

luckily people don't do this to me... and the most i do is mention how xyz thing is awesome in passing or something, because i know it is annoying to be constantly bothered about something. lol

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
they're some of the most highly rated games in recent history so it's natural for people to insist, as it is natural for people to enjoy them. you're definitely missing out, but that's not your friends' problem. i'd drop it if i were them, but i don't blame them at all, honestly. it's weird that you're not even willing to try them out.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I loathe FPS games. LOATHE. They don't really add anything to the experience for me. I never finished playing through Borderlands 2, though I like the design, because FPS are so. Fucking. Boring.

Replace "Bioshock" with "Doctor Who" and "Supernatural," and... it's my life.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-04-23 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a game I keep trying to enjoy (having picked it up on a Steam sale a few years back) but I find the encounter design more annoying than fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
You know I had the same thing for ages with Minecraft.

MoFo's were all harassing me to play it, and I was profoundly 'Meh' on it. I mostly didn't play it just to spite the fans who were pushing it.

Then I had a bit of extra money im mt XBLA account and there was literally nothing else to buy so I caved in.

Somtimes the hype is justified.
