Re: Driving

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2013-04-22 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The first time I was behind the wheel of an actual car was when I was probably about 13-14, and my parents decided to prepare me for driver's ed a few years early by letting me steer while they worked the pedals (I sat on their lap). And when I was younger, they used to let me work the stick shift while they drove - I got to recognize the sound of the motor getting to the point where it needed to shift, and then the clutch, and I'd just go to the next gear... I must've been like 10-11 at that point.

None of this was at all intimidating to me, nor was the first time I finally got to do it all by myself (just around the block in our very quiet residential neighborhood at first)... because I'd been playing racing games since I was a little kid. Pole Position, Rad Racer, Top Gear... So I'd already had a lot of practice with fake driving before I got to do the real thing. So aside from learning to check mirrors, learning to drive a real car all felt pretty natural. Had no trouble in driver's ed compared to most of the other 16-year-olds, many of whom were too nervous and cautious and many of whom were too careless and sloppy. I was just like "so much easier to avoid accidents when I'm not going 200mph, lolz". XD

The racing games gave me some bad habits that persist to this day, though. Like if there's a straight stretch of road in front of me without much traffic, I instinctively speed up. And I kind of mentally growl every time someone passes me.

My girlfriend's in a similar position to you, though - she only got her license a couple years ago due to a combination of living in places with good public transportation or living with multiple people with their own vehicles who could provide rides. And she was in her 30s when she got her license (and in fact when she asked her dad to finally teach her to drive before moving out here with me). So take heart - you're definitely not too late. =)
