Driving

[personal profile] tei 2013-04-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a secret a few days ago from a 20-something anon learning to drive. I am currently being driven 600 miles by someone so sick she keeps letting go of the steering wheel and is nearly falling asleep, and ironically, my purpose at my destination is to learn to drive. Which would be a useful skill if I had it, er, now.

When did y'all learn to drive/how was it? I'm 21 and grew up in a big city with extensive public transportation and then moved to another similar city for college, so basically it's only started to impose on be as something tht might be useful to be able to do after I graduate and have to function as an adult in whatever city I end up in.

I learned at 17, 18, I think? When I was a senior in high school. I also lived in a large city with very good public transportation, which is why I didn't do it earlier. But I thought it would be a good thing to know. I didn't really drive much after I got my license, and still don't, but I'm still glad that I have the ability to do so if the situation arises, you know? Doing things and knowing how to do things is fun.

Fifteen, license at sixteen, as early as possible ;) I live out in the country though, so I was very skittish about driving in the city for a good couple of years afterwards.

I just got my license in february at 20, though I could technically drive for years prior.

Now I'm moving to a place with buses and trains.

I am the 24 year old anon who can't drive. I am learning slowly. I just can't get over my fear. I need to get someone who every day orders me to drive against my will. Otherwise I find some way to wiggle out of it.

My grandfather started teaching me when I was young, 14/15? But I got my permit at 16 and license at 17, when I was legally able to. It was just a rite of passage to be able to get it as soon as I could

I got my license when I was 17, but I am a terrible driver and never did much driving back then, and then I moved to college and couldn't afford a car, and then moved to Japan where I didn't need one, and here I am 10 years later still not really knowing how to drive (though I do have a license.)

Same thing happened to me, only I moved to Toronto, not Japan, LOL. I've done the written once since then, but I think my subconscious made me fail hard because I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate the idea of driving...I hated it the whole time I had my learner's and I kept getting it renewed without ever taking the road test, because I knew I would fail like a failing failure due to my nerves. I was a proficient driver, it was just the nerves that got me All. The. Time.

i'm 21 and just starting to learn how to drive now. i did the classroom part of my drivers ed this past month and i'm starting the in-car part in may after i do my first test to get my G1 (canada). it's just been a mix of being too nervous and not really having the need, so i've never bothered until now.

The first time I was behind the wheel of an actual car was when I was probably about 13-14, and my parents decided to prepare me for driver's ed a few years early by letting me steer while they worked the pedals (I sat on their lap). And when I was younger, they used to let me work the stick shift while they drove - I got to recognize the sound of the motor getting to the point where it needed to shift, and then the clutch, and I'd just go to the next gear... I must've been like 10-11 at that point.

None of this was at all intimidating to me, nor was the first time I finally got to do it all by myself (just around the block in our very quiet residential neighborhood at first)... because I'd been playing racing games since I was a little kid. Pole Position, Rad Racer, Top Gear... So I'd already had a lot of practice with fake driving before I got to do the real thing. So aside from learning to check mirrors, learning to drive a real car all felt pretty natural. Had no trouble in driver's ed compared to most of the other 16-year-olds, many of whom were too nervous and cautious and many of whom were too careless and sloppy. I was just like "so much easier to avoid accidents when I'm not going 200mph, lolz". XD

The racing games gave me some bad habits that persist to this day, though. Like if there's a straight stretch of road in front of me without much traffic, I instinctively speed up. And I kind of mentally growl every time someone passes me.

My girlfriend's in a similar position to you, though - she only got her license a couple years ago due to a combination of living in places with good public transportation or living with multiple people with their own vehicles who could provide rides. And she was in her 30s when she got her license (and in fact when she asked her dad to finally teach her to drive before moving out here with me). So take heart - you're definitely not too late. =)

I took Drivers Ed. when I was...17 I think? Maybe 16. I don't know, I just know it was a year later because my parents had a deal: wait until later and they'd pay for it and for the license test, or get it immediately and I'd have to pay it all myself. Waiting was fine by me!

Driving in my hometown and the area was fine, but driving in the city was terrifying at first.

I learned after college, when I was 22 or 23. Once I got over my initial fear of (a) other cars and (b) going more than 20 miles an hour, it wasn't too bad.

I took my driving tests when I was eighteen/18 (last year). In my family almost everyone -even our maid- can drive cars because we all have our priorities to get through. If you want to go shopping and there are no more cars on the porch and no one else to take you to the mall, then sorry for ruining your day, but we all have things to do.

Now I can go to the bookstore whenever I want! :D

I learned to drive shortly before my 18th birthday (which is the standard time to do so in my country). I failed the exam on my birthday and finally got the licence about a month later.

I drove regularly for about a year, even if it was in the country/a small town and usually just the same roads. Then I moved to a city with lots of public transport and had no car, so I rarely drove.

Now, at 25, I'm just completely out of practice and a bit anxious about driving, especially somewhere I've not been been before and in cities. :(

I'm kind of an anomaly in that I'm 24, don't drive, and don't really have any desire to... Yet it's not fear-related at all. It's a "cars are big and awkward and you have to do lots of things with your hands and feet at the same time" thing. I've tried a few times, and all it did was confirm that I'm not really coordinated enough to operate anything more complicated than a bicycle. D:

I learned when I was 16. I didn't drive much until I was 17 because only seniors where allowed to drive to school. I pretty much just drove myself and my brothers to school and back. You had to have a car where I grew up and went college from because there wasn't public transportation.

Re: Driving

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Started with the permit at 15, license at 16 as soon as I could get it. I lived in California suburbia and commuted a lot to swimming, and it was a pain for my parents to drive me or find carpools for me, so they were quick to give me that mode of transportation.

Biggest snag I had was that I learned on a stick-shift (tiny VW Bug), and the driving test is a tad more harsh when you take it with a stick-shift, so my parents let me borrow the SUV for the first one - which I failed. The second one I took with the VW, but I got nervous and stalled the car - and failed. I passed the third time in the SUV because I got a little more used to driving the damn thing, but yeah. It was a pain in the ass. I still drive a lot because I tend toward small towns, and while my current car is an automatic, I'm still glad that my parents taught me on stick-shift; I feel like I'm more aware of the car because of it, and I know I'll be able to drive any type of car should the need arise.

Started when I was fifteen, as I live in the sort of town where you NEED to drive to get anywhere. I hated it, cried more than once, etc etc. Cars in general are dangerous and other drivers stress me the hell out.

20-something now and I'm just peachy with driving, really.

I grew up on a farm and had to learn to drive when I was 10. I didn't get a regular road license until I was 15. I've always been very comfortable driving but I failed the written test 3 or 4 times before I got my road license. Driving always just felt natural and translating it into test questions was beyond my ability.
