Ouch, OP, I'm sorry your friends are like that.

Maybe try just pointing out that not everyone's emotional reaction is a physical one? Just because being sad doesn't make you cry doesn't mean you aren't sad in the first place. :)

Yeah, I'm really confused by the idea that if you don't cry in public/in front of the friends you're with, a thing hasn't moved you. It's like there's some social norm that even minor grief or emotional resolution has to be performative, and I didn't get the memo...

(Now, when I say "minor grief", I don't discount the fact that for some people, they've had a bereavement in RL and seeing a movie drags it up again and the feelings are definitely not minor; I had that experience with a friend's suicide/seeing the last episode of Sherlock six months later...)

I watched Marley and Me on a flight to England a few months after the dog I had had for 15 years had to be put down. I was pretty much in hysterics (I had no idea the dog died. I should have remembered that Every Dog Dies), and I was afraid they were going to like... throw me off the plane for thinking I was a terrorist or something.

What a nightmare. :( A cinema, you can get up and walk out of, but a plane...

I ran across something similar but feline in the YA book My Sister Lives on the Mantlepiece. I picked it because everyone was raving about it and I have a boundless appetite for how books handle themes of bereavement and grief - in this case, the narrator is a 10-year-old boy whose teenage sister has died.

What none of the reviews mentioned was the subsequent (and key, plot-wise) death of the boy's cat. And I struggle with human deaths in films and books sometimes, but I absolutely lose my shit over anything happening to cats.

I really hate how emotions are expected to be broadcasted by everyone, these days. Especially grief - why does no one think "you're not grieving enough" is a dick thing to say to someone? Some people are more private with their emotions, that doesn't mean they have no feeling at all. >.<
