Wait, you cried at all these scenes, or just Katniss volunteering and Chris's character dying in SBL?

(Not judging, just easily confused)

Character death rarely makes me emotional, but inspirational movies/series will make me tear up like nothing else.

I get so swept up by that positive 'believe in yourself' and 'don't give up' attitude. Case in point, there's this baseball anime called "Major" where the protagonist's (Goro) father died from a baseball-related accident when he was a kid. It was a very emotional scene, and the way Goro reacted to it was heartbreaking. Despite that I didn't share a single tear.

I did, however, cry for a good majority of the series because of the reasons I mentioned above. In fact, I recently re-watched the series and had to keep a box of tissues nearby because I just kept on tearing up. All that motivation and optimism is just so beautiful and heart-wrenching.

WTF is even wrong with me?

I've never read THG or seen the movies, but from what I've absorbed from fandom, I would probably find the "I volunteer!" scene to be really emotionally powerful and moving, so I get it, OP.

(OTOH, The Lion King is my favorite Disney movie, and I don't think I've ever re-watched it, because of Mufasa's death. So there's that.)

Katniss volunteering gets me every time.

Unless they were playing (very possible) that's a really sad rubric they're using.

I saw Roger Ebert at a film festival once and he said that the thing that makes people cry the most in movies isn't when a character dies but when a character does something selfless and admirable. I don't know what his source was but that would explain why the "I volunteer!" scene chokes so many people up. I know both times I saw that movie, I bawled at that scene and I'm not sure I ever entirely stopped.

Some people don't cry at movies at all, though; it doesn't really reflect on how emotional you are!

The Katniss thing only got me because they were sisters. If they'd been brothers, or friends, or lovers I wouldn't have cared but sisters is my kryptonite.

Is that Click in the upper right? Does someone die in Click? I've never actually seen it, but it didn't strike me as the kind of movie in which someone dies,

Errr do I need to put 'spoilers' lol

I have no idea what the second scene is from but because of the text on it for a moment I thought it was from The Boy Who Could Fly and I was really excited. I haven't watched that in years but I used to watch it over and over when I was little. That would have been the strangest combination of films to cry over.

But it wasn't. Pointless comment is pretty pointless, sorry.

I've been known to friends as the hardass who doesn't cry in movies, because in the past I wouldn't shed tears in public. But at home I became a sob machine.

Now I'm a sob machine all the time, haha ;>;

I only cry at the end of Undercover boss and Extreme Home Makeover, dunno what that says about me?

I didn't cry any of the times my favourite characters in whatever show/Film I've watched have died so if you are heartless so am I?

I joke with my friends that I'm the heartless bitch because I don't cry at movies. It's not that I'm not feeling the emotion, it just doesn't evoke a physical response. There have been plenty of times when a friend swore I would cry when I watched a particular movie or TV show episode, and I came out the other end completely dry.

I did get really sensitive about death scenes after my grandma died and would find myself weeping (or even outright bawling when I watched the Buffy episode "The Body" without having any idea it was coming), but that response has lessened again. It's just how we are. Hope your friends are only joking with you and not truly trying to shame you.

I tend to have delayed reactions; I'll cry on the second viewing/reading, or sometimes just hours after I first watch/read. Seriously, when I finished the last Harry Potter book, I just sort of shrugged and went on LJ to watch the internet implode. Then I woke up the next morning, said "oh fuck" and burst into tears. It was... weird.

Or you could be like me, OP. I only cry when I watch movies by myself. :P

I don't cry at movie deaths either, OP.

But give me a good anime character death and I'll be sobbing like a baby.

I was the same. Bambi's mom? Nope. Old Yeller? Nope. E.T? Nope. The Fox and the Hound? Nope. I even embarrassed my mom in the theater by asking out loud why she was crying. I was about four or five at the time. Artex in Never Ending Story? Nope. All those secrets that you posted? Nope.
The stuff that did get to me? Gandalf dying in the Fellowship and Aerith's theme after he death in FF7.

I do get teary eyed a lot more now ever since I gave birth. I think that might have changed a chemical balance or something.

I'm not saying go and get knocked up, OP not unless you want to and are ready. I'm just saying you are not alone in that aspect.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Lion King didn't make me cry, but Dumbo in the Baby Mine scene? Sobbing.

Ouch, OP, I'm sorry your friends are like that.

Maybe try just pointing out that not everyone's emotional reaction is a physical one? Just because being sad doesn't make you cry doesn't mean you aren't sad in the first place. :)

I've been called a bitch for not crying at movies. I've only cried at three movies ever, Man In the Iron Mask, Wilde and The King's Speech. My mom cries at EVERYTHING. She's cried at Laverne and Shirley and Pepsi commercials.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Not just you. All these years, and the only two scenes that always make me cry are the Marseillaise scene in Casablanca, and Fetisov's apology to Burakov in Citizen X. And NOBODY'S seen Citizen X.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I cry at touching moments in movies, and once when the visuals were overwhelmingly pretty. I'm not much of a cryer though. Character death either makes me quietly sad of frustrated, especially if it seemed like it could've been avoided.
