How do you define happiness?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-04-23 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Or contentment? Do you think it is personally attainable?

Re: How do you define happiness?

I'm happy and content, so I'd say yes, it's personally attainable, and I'd define happiness as "that feeling when you can say 'I'm happy and content' without feeling like you're lying or omitting anything".

I don't think happiness is defined by the feeling's longevity or 'endgame-ness', the way happy endings are portrayed in movies. It's transient, can last a day or a year or ten years or can appear and disappear a hundred times in a lifetime, and the times where you're not happy don't invalidate the times where you are.

Being at peace with oneself and one's surroundings. For example, the times when I'm hanging out with friends or others I <3 and not wanting to trade that moment for anything else in the world - I'm sure as hell content then.

So yes, I think it's absolutely attainable.

For me it's a lack of major worries combined with optimism about things to come. That's not an all-inclusive definition for me, but it's the best way I can describe how I feel. I have a good life that I love and I am very happy. I know that could change at any time so I just enjoy it while it lasts.

A good meal and good company. Preferably around a campfire but, failing that, a living room will do too.

I don't know. I have a very real problem with acknowledging or understanding happiness or contentment and I'm unsure if it's because I have overblown high expectations due to media and reading where everything is overly emotionally charged, or if it's just me being some kind of broken. It's something I think about a lot.

This really strikes me, and I want to say I hope you do figure out your happiness. I understand this to some extent, especially the possible media influence. It can be hard :\ But I wish you the best.

Thank you. ❤

I think it was you but I am so scatterbrained I couldn't swear to it but you said/quoted something about a mood belonging to your depression, not you? I think I skimmed but it has kind of stuck with me recently.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-04-24 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That is familiar but I don't think it was me? I don't know, I'm awful scatterbrained myself lately. Memory, why have you foresaken me?

Being able to love one's self and knowing that you are as important as any other person overall is what I think lays at the very basis of happiness. At least for me. Of course a lot of outside factors also affect things, but to me the internal is more important than the external. As long as I can dig who I am, I can deal with a lot of stuff life throws at me. On the other hand, life could be going pretty well, but if I'm dissattisfied with myself for whatever reason that'll still have me looking at things like they are shit.

I think happiness is obtainable, as long as you keep in mind that it is not given to you and that you need to work for it and that happiness is not a static thing. It's not like you obtain happiness once, you are happy forever. It comes and goes, it changes, what made you happy in the past doesn't necessarily need to make you happy in the future and that is okay.

For the interested.

Right now I'd define it as not having my final grade depend on a lab partner who just tried to convince me she didn't get my incredibly important e-mail... that she responded to twice.

Tell your professor about it

if nothing else, it should give them a hearty chuckle

He doesn't give a fuck. He told me to my face he specifically gave her to me because he knows she doesn't understand the material and no one else in the class can handle her.

On the other hand he definitely plays favorites so he shouldn't be too hard on my group if I can get her to spit out five minutes of coherency. I just have to find time to do my own work as well and not kill her first.

I mean specifically tell him about the "saying that she didn't get an e-mail that she responded twice to" because that's quite funny

but you know best obviously

best of luck! I hope you can work it out, and obviously you're going to kick ass, that's just a fact

Oh. I repeated that in stunned belief so loud the whole class heard. He just shook his head and opened another bag of cheetos. I'm sure I will find it very funny as well. Someday. :D

What above anon said. Forward the emails she responded to and her "excuse" to your prof. Wow, did she really think she can get away with this?

I think happiness consists of:

1. Doing work that you can see the results of around you (so, if my choice was between being a construction worker and knowing that because of me buildings get built, or a paper-shuffler who is never quite sure what effect thair work is having, I would choose the former)

2. Having acheived a level of competancy in that work that makes you feel valued in that role

3. Having a network of people around you that you love and respect, and vice versa

These conditions can be fulfilled if you play your cards right no matter what stage of life you are in, from elementary school to retirement, and I think I'm at a point where I have them fulfilled in my current state. Of course, things like competancy in your work and a reliable network of friends take time to build up, so I also recognize that as soon as I graduate from my current school and go on to another place I'll probably be miserable for a while, but that's part of figuring things out in a new place and station in life and building long-term happiness.

I've thought of myself as pretty content and happy for a while. For me, it's being at peace with yourself and what's happening around you, and prioritising time for yourself. Work and being useful is pretty important in being happy too

The lack of despair.

And probably.

Re: How do you define happiness?

I hope you think it's more than the lack of despair.

Re: How do you define happiness?

Happiness is feeling joy for what you have and accepting what you don't.

Growing up, it was always heavily implied that my happiness hinged on financial security and the attainment of signs of wealth (a house, a new car, etc...), but seeing this idea drive my mother nearly insane with stress sort of turned me off of that philosophy in general. I don't have a lot of money or a high-paying job, and I'm ears-deep in debt from student loans, and I experience a lot of stress... But I have a loving partner, a wonderful (if somewhat assholish) cat, a roof over my head, and decent food. I may never be rich enough to attain "signs of wealth," but chances are, even if I had the money, I wouldn't bother with them anyway. I don't want for much, so I'd rather spend the money on fun things rather than on things that cry, "I've made it in life and I want everyone to know about it."
