Today, I almost lost my shit over someone who insisted repeatedly on writing the cost of things like this: xx$

I don' t know about other countries, but this person was from the US, and in the US, the dollar sign does not go after the money. THE DOLLAR SIGN DOES NOT GO AFTER THE MONEY!!!

Jesus fucking Christ. I have no idea why that bothered me so damn much.

I'm wit it. Drives me nuts.

I do this in emails sometimes. Hopefully the people that I email with would tell me if it bothers them like this.

Yeeeah, as with so many other things, I think the USA is pretty alone in having that order...?

Personally, I just don't get the logic. "$" would be pronounced "dollars", right? So wouldn't it make more sense to put it after the number, since you don't say "that item costs dollars five"? A rule is a rule, and I can understand your annoyance -- but I'd be curious to hear whether or not you actually find it logical.

English Canada writes $xx. And from what I've seen Britain writes (pound symbol) before the price, and same with Europe and euros.

It wasn't really my intention to start an argument about this, but... I disagree, sorry. I was in Germany recently, and the Euro sign was after -- take a look at Niederegger's online shop for example: http://www.niederegger.de/epages/Niederegger.sf/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Niederegger/Categories/Shop/200/216

It's the same in Sweden, Denmark, Japan, etc.

Depends where you go I guess. When I was in Greece it was, in fact, the opposite. Amazon's many iterations like to write the currency symbol in front, as do other online sites in UK and Europe.

(Japanese sites don't seem terribly consistent though - it's either ¥xx, or xx円 it seems.)

Yup. It's always in front if it's the ¥ and in back if it's the 円, as far as I know.

I'm French and it's written afterward here.

Woo, boy. American here and I have never used XX$ in my life. I can't even recall anyone else ever using it either, and I've been all over the place. My family was constantly moving around when I was a kid/teen and $XX was pretty much the standard way of using the dollar sign at all of my schools.

Hahaha, I do this every once in a while. But I have an excuse at least: I'm Canadian, and speak French sometimes and it's normal for French Canadians to write prices out like that.

So unless that person spent a hell of a lot of time in Quebec or something...

That looks very odd to me too, but... at the same time, the standard way of writing it makes no sense given how it's pronounced. It's written with the dollar sign first, but when you say it, you say "dollars" last. I wonder why it came to be the convention that it's written in that order.

Re: Nonfandom secrets!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Because you take it as a whole. It's the same reason we don't say words by spelling them.

Re: Nonfandom secrets!

No, I mean... I feel like that explains why we can read "$20" as "twenty dollars" with no difficulty, but it doesn't really explain why we write it that way in the first place, rather than writing "20$" (whereas we do write, say, "20¢" rather than "¢20").
