It's that fewer people write about the things they like. Therefore fewer things to enjoy, more stuff to wade through to get to stuff you'd like. It's surely not hard to grasp.

The numbers are in fact misleading: there are even fewer of the book-based works than it seems due to people tagging modern verse with bookverse presumably as an ill-conceived tribute or w/e.

Plus, once you've read them all already, quantity does become an issue.
