Would you buy an American castle to live in?

[personal profile] mekkio 2013-04-25 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
A Victorian one is up for sale in New York. On sale for less than a million. 36,000 square feet.

The owners have been trying to sell it for the past seven years with no bites.

I wonder if people aren't biting because they think it's haunted or they are thinking the upkeep would make the place a money pit.

So, if you could, would you buy and live in an American castle?

If I could afford it*, yeah... Though maybe not an American one?

Or heck if I can still work with what I like, I can totally become an American!

*Including maids and a butler! What is the point of living in a castle if one does not have a butler?

What even is the point of a house that big?

Sure. If I could afford it and any renovations, plus upkeep, etc.

That is way too much open space for me.

I might, if I had the money.

I'd open it up to homeless LGBT teens.

This is one of the few only good uses for that much space <3

If I had the money (maintenance must be a nightmare) then hell yes I would. I'd love it if it had a reputation for being haunted or ghost stories connected with the place.

Oh hey, I've been there. That house/castle is in a horrible location, which added to the cost and upkeep is probably the reason it hasn't sold.

If I had money to throw away, yeah I'd probably buy a castle. Location would be a huge factor though. I wouldn't use it as just a home though, probably open it up to people or make it a family gathering place or something.

Yeeeeeah. High maintenance building not originally designed for residential or commercial use, a sluggish housing market, and on the historical register which means that anything you do with the property has the potential to become a political and regulatory nightmare.

High-end houses in my neighborhood are not selling either. The gossip I've been hearing is that they're not even being looked at.

Anyone remember the J. Peterman Company? They're back to selling fabulous vintage-inspired clothes/accessories/a few house wares with overwritten descriptions; but back in the '90s they also sold some movie memorabilia and other luxury items. Including a lighthouse. In Rhode Island. It had its own oyster garden. My sister wanted us to move there SO BAD. I think it was more the novelty of a building for sale in a catalog alongside a cocktail dress and a panama hat, but still.

Anyway, no, that's too much space for just me, or even for just my family. It's also too cold in New York, so double no thanks.

Oh wow, Peterman is back? I miss their catalogs even though I never bought anything.

It is! They came back gotta be close to 10 years ago now. I got my prom dress from their last chance sale department. Also a gorgeous linen sundress that was sooo worth it.

I was going to say probably not but then I looked at the interior and it's absolutely gorgeous, so yea. (Though I wouldn't need 1/4th that much space so I'd have to do something interesting with it.)

I'd like to live in a place that doesn't require me to vacuum away all my time. So... no. I'd take a small, fully renovated bungalow though!

Nah, not even if I were physically able to climb up its stairs. Too much maintenance, and the heating bills alone would probably be astronomical. I'd much rather have one of those cute little Tumbleweed houses, but again, I can't even climb stairs, much less a ladder, so that's out of the question too. Oh, well.

Aw, hell, no O.o Why would anyone want so much space (for personal use?).

Give me a cozy cottage somewhere nice to escape from the world, or a downtown city house (so I can adopt all the street animals I'm able to mantain with dignity), then we're talking. If not for my desire of adopting animals/making a refuge, I'd even be a 100% apartment person. I'm not going to have kids, at most I'll have a partner of any gender, so my idea of a comfortable living space is having a place big enough to fit me, my cats, all my books, some furniture, a queen sized bed and a good enough (but manageable) kitchen. The less I have to clean, the better.

If I could afford it, and afford the maintenance? Why not? I've always wanted to have a library, a music room, a conservatory, and enough spare bedrooms to throw really massive Edwardian style house parties.

I'd love to live in that. Have no idea about the location, but it is a beautiful building, and I like castles and it has to be cheaper than a real castle.

However, aside from the purchase price, I imagine there's some serious $ in maintenance and property taxes, and I'm not sure whether the surrounding neighborhoods will properly recognize me as their feudal overlord... so, for now, I'm going to say no. (But I wish I could!)
