AO3 Etiquette?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I just got an account and was going to start posting fic there. I just realized my username, while completely fine on its own, if looked at with the first and only, at the moment, fic I was thinking of posting could be considered full of unfortunate implications. Essentially the fic deals with a dark topic respectfully and my username has a whimsical take on a word that could be related to that topic but isn't necessarily only connected to it.

Will people notice on AO3 or will it not be an issue? If it is an issue can I just put a disclaimer that it's an unfortunate accident and would that solve it? I know I could change my name or use a pseud but I would rather not. However, if I really need to I will change my name.

TLDR: How do people on AO3 react to usernames when compared to a piece of fiction the author writes?

While I respect your desire to be anon for this, I have a really hard time answering this without knowing the username and the fandom/fic subject.

My thought (without that information) is, if you don't say anything and just use your username and let it go, there's a chance that one or two people will notice a connection and find it inappropriate. If you do include an author's note, then almost everybody will notice and feel awkward, even if they believe you that it's an unfortunate coincidence -- except for one or two people who will demand that the connection be explained because they don't get it, and then someone will feel the need to answer them, and then it'll be even MORE awkward.

My advice? Write a second fic. Completely unrelated. Different fandom even, maybe. Post that one first.

AYRT

I've thought it over and I think it really could be taken the wrong way so I'll just write a short second fic first.

I would say my name but that would not only out me here but also possibly my tumblr so I think I'll just ere on the safe side.

Thank you for your advice.

I honestly have no idea. This sounds like one of those case-by-case deals that would vary from person to person. If you think it's going to be discordant enough you might as well put the disclaimer up. It'll definitely play better than having to backtrack if you get called out on it.

Of course you could come off as an overreacting weirdo if the connection is negligible or just end up drawing the attention of people who otherwise would not have noticed.

FWIW I rarely pay attention to an author's username unless I especially liked their style.

I'll definitely keep this in mind. Thank you.

I think I'll discuss it with a few people I can out myself to even though they don't go to AO3. They can probably see if it's really bad or not. (I think it might be.)

Again, thanks.

I'm with the first anon; there's no way to tell unless we know the specifics here, and it totally will depend on your audience.

Your safest bet is to write something unrelated first, or a couple somethings, but I'd just let it go. Usually when I'm browsing AO3 I only glance at names, and don't really register them. If someone makes a big stink about it, then put up a disclaimer (ex: "In response to several accusations: no, my username is not related to this fic, I apologize for any misunderstandings," etc.), but otherwise don't make trouble for yourself.

I would give the specifics but I really don't want to out myself here. I'll see if I can talk to some friends who don't use F!S or AO3 and see what they think.

Okay. That sounds good. I'll be taking your advice along with the others. Thank you.

Silly question time. If you are so worried, why not change your username?

Because I really like it and it's not bad on its own. I said I was willing to change it if I needed to but the other people here gave me an alternative.
