This is probably how some of my fics have gotten kudos, either from you or someone like you. I can't imagine anyone is reading my rarepairs because they actually want to.

yeah I have a feeling a lot of the kudos on my rarepair fics are just sort of "thanks for being different" rather than "this is a good fic!" lol

That actually seems kind of sweet. A higher kudo count would probably get other people to read it too and may even get more people to like the ship.

This is probably all wishful thinking on my part but it's a nice thought.

This sounds sweet, but it makes me feel even more insecure about my works for obscure fandoms. A couple of them got kudos almost right away after being posted, and I suspect that it was an "I love [canon source]" shout rather than a praise from somebody who actually read the thing.

Still, I think it's nice of you. Just as long as it isn't a crowd of dudes running around on AO3 throwing kudos at everyone.

Speaking as someone who mostly writes rare pairs (= every pairing that's not my fandom's OTP of choice)... THANK YOU.

*hugs gratefully*

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
i wouldn't doubt it, and i wouldn't doubt that some of them are just from people happy to find literally anything for their own rarepair or even uncommon kink needs

on kinkmemes, i've actually seen a lot of writers start out filling that really niche stuff, and growing into some pretty fantastic fanfic authors just from the attention they got for posting the weird stuff

Sometimes one just has nothing to say apart from "that was good" or "I liked it" or even "efklndslkgnvlkdsnv". Kudos are an analogue of those comments.

Not a common reaction, no, but it's not a problem if you don't care? Especially if you're in a big fandom?

I personally get really excited over every kudos I get, but that's because my fandoms are tiny.

I think of it like a "Like" on Facebook. As in, "I approve of this, but I don't have anything to say."

I appreciate Kudos, because I know what it's like to really enjoy a fic but not really know what to put in a comment.

It's a low-engagement thumbs-up. They're definitely nice to get, although I still prefer comments by a factor of 10. (Well, positive comments anyway ;-)

I think they're the AO3 equivalent of fb's "Like" button. I usually check the hits/kudos ratio - the number of kudos doesn't say much in itself, but if a relatively large portion of those who read the story say they liked it, or, conversely, if a lot of people clicked on a story but noone even cared for it enough to click the kudos button, that does tell you something.

Kudos = I like this. Sometimes people don't have more to say than that, so it's just quicker than leaving a comment. Also, a kudos is always a same positive note--people just browsing fiction can go "hey, 100 people liked this!" Comments are not as good of a measure, because really, you could have a 100 comments calling someone a racist dickbag.

It's true that a lot of people don't like kudos from what I've seen, but I personally love them. I don't feel obligated to respond to kudos, and my social awkwardness is limited then. :)

And it's also awesome for people like me who get anxious just posting "Thank you for posting". Most authors appreciate kudos but even here from time to time you can see the kudos vs comments drama.

Because fandom is so tiny that saying the names wouldn't do it, A robot monkey and a plush penguin. It was total crack, but the scary thing is somebody wrote a sequel for it with more thought put into it than the original.

I've paired two books together. As in, literal books (pun at your leisure).

I've also paired two spaceships together, or paired spaceships with their captains/pilots.

And I wrote one crossover pairing involving Cthulhu, which I think automatically qualifies.

Also, a dragon with ghost, although that was an AU fusion thing.

I think it's a toss-up between Tron/OMC/OMC/OMC/OMC/OMC (plus some more that were implied) and Everyone/Everyone in Inception.

Rita Skeeter/Hermione Granger. Yes, Hermione was a consenting adult in this fic, and yes, the majority of their dialogue did consist of them insulting each other.

As someone who almost always ends up shipping, and writing for, rare pairs: You rock.

I do that too.
