I was thinking of writing a fic that heavily relied upon switching languages. When I thought of doing this I remembered a fic I read years ago from Star Trek Reboot fandom that allowed you to roll you mouse over a line and see the translation. This was on LJ. Is such a thing possible on DW and AO3? If not then I'll either have to scrap the idea or come at it from a completely different angle.

Can I just say that I hate it when authors do this? What happens if someone saves your fic so they can read it offline or on a digital book? There's nothing more annoying than putting a fic on your reader only to discover that there are sections you can't understand unless you read it online/keep going to the end of the fic to read the translation in the notes (if a translation is even provided).

Just use English. Italicize foreign speech and make sure to indicate what language is being spoken. That will make reading so much easier on the reader.

I can't tell you how many times I've dropped a fic for this reason alone.

This. As a reader I honestly get nothing out of foreign text being in a fic. :\

Then my fic wouldn't be for you? I would put a warning before the fic so you would know beforehand what you were getting into. You don't have to read it and I don't really care if the style puts people off. First person perspective puts people off but you still see fic authors using it. I really loved it when I got to read the fic like that. (It didn't take me to the end of the page but translations were there too in case people needed it. Mouse overs would just have the translation pop up. You didn't need to click.)

Just popping in to say that I actually enjoy reading fics with other languages in them as long as I can easily find the translation.

One of my favourite BBC!Sherlock fics have a lot of random languages in it, and it is awesome!

Thank you. I knew going in it was a "love it or hate it" style. I was fine with that. I like it so I'm going to write it. I'm honestly not even sure why the other anon had to comment. I wasn't asking if it was a good idea. I was asking how to do it.

It should be possible on DW and AO3 by using alt title HTML codes. I don't know how to do it exactly though.

I think you can do this with spans and title attributes for the span.

Here's an example. When you hover over the Japanese there should be a title popup that says "Hello. My name is Sara."

こんにちは。私の名前はサラです。

Here's the code for it:

This is the most basic, but I don't know how well it will handle huge chunks of text. And of course browsers vary on popup. I am using firefox and it pops up just fine.

Speaking as someone who's used it in journal-based RP while playing a pokemon... it handles just fine for stuff up to at least a good-sized paragraph or two, at which point you ought to be doing separate spans for each anyway.
