But. That ability of his is limited, isn't it. That would make absolutely no sense. Or they rewrite him into Gary Time Stu. I guess.

Eh. The canon re: his number of regenerations has never really been all that firm tbh. It can easily be handwaved.

I think in Classic Who, the Master needed to be treated on Gallifrey, and when the Gallifreyan medical doctors were done, they restored his regenerations, so there are ways to get around it. And let's be real; as long as DW continues to be profitable, they'll keep making it, and if Doc-Boy runs out of regenerations, the writers will come up with something.

I don't think it was ever stated that the Time Lords did any such thing for the Master, but they apparently could transfer unused regenerations from one Time Lord (usually a criminal) to another.

There's also no explanation why the Master in New!Who has regenerations, because he ran out way back during the Fourth Doctor's run (in fact the whole Daedly Assassin serial was about a crispy-charred Master trying to get more lives by using the Sash of Rassilon... or some such thing like that, it's been a while since I watched that one) and after that he stole bodies of other people to stay alive. Suddenly in New!Who he's back and totally Time Lord again.
My best guess is the Time Lords tried to get his help and offered a new body with a full set of regenerations, only after he got it, he did a runner and hid as a human.

But a possible future version of the Doctor tried to steal the Doctor's regenerations by putting up on trial.

I do agree that if the series is still going strong once it hits Doctor no. 13, they're going to come up with an excuse to give him more regenerations.

Much as I hate what New!Who did with the Master, I think that point was explained? Didn't the Time Lords revived him to take part in the time war and so, most likely, restored his generations in the process?

At least I think it was something like that, but I only watched the episodes when they aired, because, yeah, I very much dislike everything about the new Master (apart from Simm, who tried his best to work with what he got).

isn't he Gary Stu already? the couple episodes I saw all had speeches about how this douchebag is the bestest most specialest thing ever

(Anonymous) 2013-04-29 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm curious: which episodes? 'Cause you're supposed to take most of the speeches I remember as somewhat ironic. The show's general message is, well, he DOES do pretty amazing heroic stuff and so it's no surprise a lot of in-universe people see him as awesome. But OTOH, he's incredibly normal in a lot of ways and incredibly messed up in a lot of ways and just plain goofy in other ways and not exactly uniformly awesome.

I dunno, kind of like a comicbook superhero I guess? Because the holyshitthatwassofuckingawesome is true, but that doesn't make the fact that he's a kooky old alien with really bad PTSD who wanders around in a spaceship any less true.

On the OTHER other hand, yeah, he's approximately as Gary Stu as a superhero. Take that as you will, since it depends on what stuff your personal Gary Stu barometer measures.

...I'm sorry, you don't seriously believe that the BBC is gonna go "Yup, we're gonna cancel this show that makes a fuckton of money because we want to stay consistent with a plotpoint that can be handwaved away in about ten seconds"

You don't do you? Please. Say you don't.

I assume you're troll because wow are you angry, but let me humor you:

There's a difference between "let's find a way to have one more season with a new doctor although it shouldn't be possible" and completely throwing the concept of the limit away to scout for a new actor _every season_.

Er...what? That's what would break your brain? More regenerations? Even though that's never even been mentioned since the new series? Huh. Well, everyone has their nope button, I guess...

But anyway, nah. Unless the Beeb decides to cancel the show due to low ratings (which is 99.99% sure not gonna happen) or something before the guy playing Thirteen quits, they're gonna handwave the regeneration issue. I mean...the idea of them canceling the show for a little detail like that, after 33 seasons, is kinda lolworthy.

Also, I'm pretty sure using the phrase "that would make absolutely no sense" with a straight face when talking about Doctor Who is, like, a fatal jinx of doom or something.

I don't even watch this series. Only saw the season with 9. Dude, chill. Seriously.

Sorry, but chill about...um...what? I was just joking good-naturedly about a seriously crazy show I watch. Could you point to the part of my comment where I was being un-chill?

And hey, it's cool, okay? I wasn't dogpiling you or whatever. I don't know you personally, so I just assumed that if you knew all that stuff and were commenting, you were a regular viewer, so I thought I'd ramble a bit like I usually do ;) I think that's a pretty understandable mistake to make on FS.

I don't even watch this series. Only saw the season with 9.

And we were supposed to somehow know that from your comment...how, exactly?
