But. That ability of his is limited, isn't it. That would make absolutely no sense. Or they rewrite him into Gary Time Stu. I guess.

Eh. The canon re: his number of regenerations has never really been all that firm tbh. It can easily be handwaved.

I think in Classic Who, the Master needed to be treated on Gallifrey, and when the Gallifreyan medical doctors were done, they restored his regenerations, so there are ways to get around it. And let's be real; as long as DW continues to be profitable, they'll keep making it, and if Doc-Boy runs out of regenerations, the writers will come up with something.

isn't he Gary Stu already? the couple episodes I saw all had speeches about how this douchebag is the bestest most specialest thing ever

(Anonymous) 2013-04-29 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm curious: which episodes? 'Cause you're supposed to take most of the speeches I remember as somewhat ironic. The show's general message is, well, he DOES do pretty amazing heroic stuff and so it's no surprise a lot of in-universe people see him as awesome. But OTOH, he's incredibly normal in a lot of ways and incredibly messed up in a lot of ways and just plain goofy in other ways and not exactly uniformly awesome.

I dunno, kind of like a comicbook superhero I guess? Because the holyshitthatwassofuckingawesome is true, but that doesn't make the fact that he's a kooky old alien with really bad PTSD who wanders around in a spaceship any less true.

On the OTHER other hand, yeah, he's approximately as Gary Stu as a superhero. Take that as you will, since it depends on what stuff your personal Gary Stu barometer measures.

...I'm sorry, you don't seriously believe that the BBC is gonna go "Yup, we're gonna cancel this show that makes a fuckton of money because we want to stay consistent with a plotpoint that can be handwaved away in about ten seconds"

You don't do you? Please. Say you don't.

I assume you're troll because wow are you angry, but let me humor you:

There's a difference between "let's find a way to have one more season with a new doctor although it shouldn't be possible" and completely throwing the concept of the limit away to scout for a new actor _every season_.

Er...what? That's what would break your brain? More regenerations? Even though that's never even been mentioned since the new series? Huh. Well, everyone has their nope button, I guess...

But anyway, nah. Unless the Beeb decides to cancel the show due to low ratings (which is 99.99% sure not gonna happen) or something before the guy playing Thirteen quits, they're gonna handwave the regeneration issue. I mean...the idea of them canceling the show for a little detail like that, after 33 seasons, is kinda lolworthy.

Also, I'm pretty sure using the phrase "that would make absolutely no sense" with a straight face when talking about Doctor Who is, like, a fatal jinx of doom or something.

I think having the Doctor regenerate at the end of every series would be a bit predictable and it might make it more difficult when developing characters and relationships.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't be opposed, though, especially since it means I wouldn't hear wailing from Tennant fangirls every time Matt Smith is on TV.

Instead you'll get to listen to biitter Matt Smith fans every time his replacement is on screen.

I've always thought it would be interesting to have a show that changes each season or has a highly rotating cast. Either because characters are killed off, or it focuses on incoming Freshman or newbies, or whatever. Just keep it fresh and changing. On the other hand, I sometimes suck at adapting to change and get stuck on certain characters so that might not work.

I don't understand at what time they replace doctors. does something have to happen in canon for a new doctor to generate or whatever? or is there just surprise! a new one every once in a while?

He has to have a fatal injury.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Usually the old Doctor has to die. So far he's had radiation poisoning a couple of times, actual poisoning, grevious bodily harm from TARDIS crashes or big falls or exploratory heart surgery, forced execution by his own people (technically forced regeneraton, but to him largely the same), absorbing energy from the time vortex (which possibly comes under 'radiation poisoning', now that I think of it, making that probably his #1 COD) and what was possibly old age (Hartnell/One).

Other Time Lords have also regenerated in a few ways. It's implied via Romana that it can be optional (as in, you don't need to be fatally injured), and if you do it optionally you get more control over the next body. Various plots involving the Master also implied that you can be given more regenerations or have them taken away, as well as being forced into them a-la the Doctor's second regeneration (though, really, killing him will do). This sort of all went up in the air with Nu!Who and the loss of the Time Lords, so it's possible that there aren't any limitations to how many you can have anymore.

But, um. Yeah. Essentially it happens when the Doctor is mortally wounded/killed.

I haven't heard about the exploratory heart surgery before, which one died of that?

Sorry OP but I think that's a terrible idea. I was hesitant to get into Who as it is, due to the fact that characters come and go so often. I only enjoy shows where I feel invested in the characters and having them change that often would just seem like a slap in the face, IMO.

Plus, we only had Nine for a year and it was FAR too short. He was awesome and we never got to see enough before he left. I'd hate for such quick departures to be planned/the norm.

This, I'm generally okay with the rotating cast on Who but one series often feels too short. 8 and 9 are the two doctors I always want more of. And on the companion side I always wanted another series with Donna.

There can be a time limit but not such a short one.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-29 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
i dunno about every year, but i'd like to see it more often. i'm ready to move on from matt, at least. and i don't mean that negatively -- i enjoyed his doctor (reminds me a bit of classic who, to be honest. two and seven, maybe?), but i'm ready for a new interpretation.

There's also the fact that they keep delaying the airtimes and splitting up the seasons. And there was the whole gap in 2009. If we'd been on a regular schedule since 2005, we'd be almost finished with season 9 right now, not season 7.
