1. Since Eccleston only lasted one season, by the time Doctor Who really got going, it was Ten who ended up being their first Doctor and it's pretty common for most people that their first Doctor is their favorite Doctor.
2. He plays pretty well into fantasies--his weirdness is a lot more approachable and less alien than Eleven, and he's also probably the most classically handsome Doctor after Eight (and even then, I think his face is more personally appealing to most people).
3. He's lasted longer than the other three (although Eleven will be just as long by the end of this season), and his seasons were stronger.

But I don't disagree that it applies to a lot of people. I'm just one of the ones it doesn't. Maybe it's because I first experienced DW through reruns.
