I'm confused about why you'd choose short hair if it made you feel bad.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
sometimes women really do prefer to wear their hair short but the societal pressuring and individual comments from people about how you'd be prettier with it long/it makes you look like a man/whatever make us feel terrible

huh. Thanks for giving an explanation!

Trigger warning: Homophobia and general nastiness against women

THIS. Looking online for short hair inspiration, I found the following comments:

"If a woman has short hair, she looks like a ten-year-old boy, or Jim Carrey!"

"You have short hair? You're unfeminine and lazy!"

"I'd personally do a penis check on every woman with short hair - or assume she's a d*ke!"

DA
I have had short hair on and off all my life and I have never run into any of this. Not to say I doubt it happens, I'm just shocked is all. What the hell people.

+1

I've had short hair for my entire life and I've never had anyone say anything even remotely like that to me.

It's funny--having long hair my entire life (because I like it that way, damn it) has gotten me no end of comments about how OMG AMAZING I would look if I chopped it all off, every summer people ask me when I'm going to cut my hair because it must be so hot and horrible having long hair when it's so hot and humid, and being told that I look childish and will never have a real professional job as long as my hair is long.

The only person you can ever hope to make happy, I have learned, is yourself.

Mine's long, but always pulled back and plaited - so then people ask why I bother having it long if I'm not going to 'do' anything with it. (Because short or loose, it gets in my face and drives me crazy, is why.)

Nth to your last line.

AYRT

I get that, too! People are always telling me what I should be doing with it, recommending product and styles that take literally hours and several steps to do. I'm a teacher who commutes an hour to work every day--if anyone thinks I'm getting up at 4 or 5 in the morning to ~do my hair~ when it's just going to get wrecked within 20 minutes of leaving the house anyway, they have another think coming.

It's fantastic on the rare nights I do get to go out and having fancy-ass hair isn't impractical, but the amount of people who think I need to have it dressed up 24 hours a day...hm.
