Perhaps its the "out of what society considers the norm for an adult" aspect of it that you find embarrassing

You know I think this is a really good point. I enjoy looking at cosplay on occasion and I can certainly appreciate the hard work that goes into it, but at the same time I experience the same kind of secondhand embarrassment as other people have mentioned. I've never been to a con myself and while I'd like to go I doubt I ever will since I know my RL friends and coworkers would view me in an entirely different way then they do now. I don't even like to admit to people in person I enjoy anime more than "adult" live action shows because I know they'll consider it dorky, nerdy, or childish as you pointed out. On the internet the gloves can come off but in real life it kind of sucks that I feel like I have to hide these things.
