I will never understand cosplay and don't participate in it, but I enjoy seeing people do it, especially if they do a good job. Perhaps its the "out of what society considers the norm for an adult" aspect of it that you find embarrassing? In other words, these days, dressing up for Halloween is something that a lot of adults do and it is--for the most part--an acceptable thing [I mean, just look at all the Halloween stores filled with adult costumes that sprout up everywhere mid-August], but cosplay has an element to it that's sort of side-eyed as being nerdy or dorky, or childish, and perhaps it's that element that bothers you.

You know I think this is a really good point. I enjoy looking at cosplay on occasion and I can certainly appreciate the hard work that goes into it, but at the same time I experience the same kind of secondhand embarrassment as other people have mentioned. I've never been to a con myself and while I'd like to go I doubt I ever will since I know my RL friends and coworkers would view me in an entirely different way then they do now. I don't even like to admit to people in person I enjoy anime more than "adult" live action shows because I know they'll consider it dorky, nerdy, or childish as you pointed out. On the internet the gloves can come off but in real life it kind of sucks that I feel like I have to hide these things.

I think that's exactly why I feel weird when surrounded by cosplayers at cons. I want to like what they do, but I can't shake off that feeling of "nerd guilt" or "shame" or whatever it is.

I've never thought of it like that, but that's a very good point. Might very well be something like that going on! Which us weird, because I've always found it silly to put too much credence into arbitrary standards of adulthood and all that, but apparently they're still lurking around in my head more than I thought.
