I can see why you'd think that. I think it's not the common interpretation just because it's a little...squicky, but it's not like Evangelion has a bunch of healthy relationships in it.

I think in my head she's more of a daughter to Gendo, though, than a lover.

I think she is a daughter figure to Gendo. I also think... well, I don't think they're boning, but I think there is a weird sexual element to their relationship, because he simultaneously sees her as a daughter-figure and, at least to some extent, as a replacement for his wife. Because Gendo is a really fucked up dude, and Eva is a fucked up show. That's honestly how I've always read it.

So, you can have your cake and eat it too! Everyone's right! Because of incredibly fucked-up emotional dysfunction! Yay!

...it's not?? Wow. I totally thought that was the implication, myself.

You know, this being Evangelion, it wouldn't be so farfetched. Also the few conversations that Gendou and Shinji had gave me the impression that they where more like love rivals rather than stranged father and son (if we could even call them that).

It was like reading Oedipus all over again, but with more cloning.

eta: And now you got me thinking about their relationship. Like how it doesn't even feel like father/daughter either because Gendou never saw Rei as a person. She was just a a thing he could to reach his goals.

And now I'm sad. Fucking Evangelion, man. :(

It makes sense, and if I'm being honest, I've thought that too.

Though their relationship (and Rei's existence in general) is already fucked up enough that I don't want to think about it.

The way Evangelion liked to be fucked up I was actually surprised this wasn't the case. To be honest though, I find the implication of her being romantically infatuated with Shinji(and vice versa) to be more creepy than this, but it doesn't seem to bother anyone.

I've seen several people that refuse to ship Shinji/Rei because of the implications. I don't ship it myself, although it's only partly about her being a clone of his mother (and partly just that I don't think they're particularly good for one another...).

~~Well that and the only Shinji pairing I seem to be able to get into is Kaworu/Shinji so...yeah...~~

Sort of related, but this reminds me of how off-putting Mewtwo's origin is to me. Doctor tries to clone his dead daughter and some pokemon. All the pokemon die randomly and so does the dead daughter. Mewtwo wakes up enraged because of this. Why, whyyyyy. It was even worse that the daughter's name was (daughter's name 2) and that he was only cloning Mew to revive his dead daughter, and how his wife walked out on him for it.

Japan, man.

I'm so glad I've never gotten into any fandoms like this.
But it really makes me understand all the child abuse and molestation in the world when I come to F!S every day.

Because I think it's creepy as fuck to think he was having sex with her, but that is the implication I saw in the show. I don't have to think that something is right or good to think that it might have happened. Really, it just made him seem that much more disturbing to me.

I've definitely always assumes he was raping her.

I didn't interpret it that way, but given how fucked up everyone in that show is, it wouldn't shock me if the show went there.

I think it probably just seems that way because NGE finds it necessary to hyper-fetishize all its female characters, full stop. The way they're portrayed, it's believable that they're sleeping with any and all of the male characters.

I was about the same age and yes, for me, that was the implication. I'm honestly surprized that it's not commonly accepted in fandom - back in the days, all the crack fics included at least one reference to Gendou being an old perv with Rei.

I remember thinking it for the first half of the series or so.
