Re: Pet Peeve Tropes?
I'd love to see:
-They hate at the beginning AND the end. And all the way through. And no angry sex.
or
-They like each other at the beginning.
Re: Pet Peeve Tropes?
(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)There's quite a range between "they hate each other at the beginning and are in love at the end" and something as boring as "they hate each other at the beginning and at the end". Who the fuck wants to watch a movie about that?
Re: Pet Peeve Tropes?
Also, for fenm's other example, the two characters could like each other but have several other obstacles to overcome before they can be together.
Re: Pet Peeve Tropes?
There are ways the characters could change that wouldn't involve them falling in love. I'm not talking about romance movie here.
where nothing happens
You now movie can be about more than just whether two people got together, right? So not wanting two people to fall in love =/= wants nothing to happen.

Yes, you're right, there is. That's a fair point. The problem is, even that middle ground rarely happens. That's the problem. It's barely always "hate -> love", not "hate -> like" or "hate -> grudging respect".
Re: Pet Peeve Tropes?
Me? I think it'd be great. Enemies having to work together for whatever. Angry snark and trading insults, and while they work together for the sake of whatever, at the end they go their separate ways secure that yup, still can't stand that other person.
Re: Pet Peeve Tropes?
For the hate bit, you've got foe yay to work with.
For the mutual like bit, the work it takes to make a relationship work. And maybe the relationship itself isn't even the focus since it's no longer the bonus/prize to be sought at the end, so there could be different plot throughout without having to force sexual tension because that's just because.

Re: Pet Peeve Tropes?
(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 06:30 am (UTC)(link)Someone who is sick and tired of that damned story? I would love to see a movie where the boy and girl (or man and woman) who start out hating each other keep hating each other because their hate is real and true and genuine.
And hate-then-love strikes me as ridiculously unrealistic. I have never known any real life people who started out hating (I mean hate, here, not indifference or ambivalence) each other who then ended up falling in love.
Re: Pet Peeve Tropes?
(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)I dislike this trope too and it's so prevalent it's frustrating. I want the two characters who fall in love to actually like each other beforehand.

I would also totally be down for enemies having to work together or whatever plot and still ending up enemies and no sex at all.
