Pet Peeve Tropes?

Not necessarily from TVTropes (although it makes a good point of reference), but do you have any tropes that you just hate seeing?

I personally really hate stories where a character overhears a conversation, like "You're cheating on your spouse!" and spouse overhears, is terribly shocked, runs away, and then the person finishes "...with cards!" and there's a whole stupid episode devoted to it. aka Poor Communication Kills.

I also hate when characters lie about something only to be humiliated and their lives torn a part because of this lie. Not all lies are bad. Not all lies are harmful. For once I'd just like for someone to confess their lie before being found out. It's the stupidest Aesop ever--don't lie, because you'll eventually get caught!

Ummm maybe not a trope, but when everything is fixed in like the last 5% of the fic. And you are just like, whattt?

I can't stand when one character eavesdrops on another one having sex/masturbating. Especially if there is dirty talk. I want to avert my eyes. That is for fics.

For TV Shows/Movies "Death is Cheap". I hate any show that just brings their characters back over and over and over.

That'd be a Deus Ex Machina, wouldn't it? It doesn't need to be supernatural, just something that comes out of nowhere to solve everything.

Haha I like it when characters eavesdrop on sex.

- Pair the Spares

- Female protagonist has to choose between the cute (and smart, and kind, and responsible, etc.) nice guy and the "handsome leech". Of course, they choose the handsome leech every single time.

- Protagonists in fantasy/sci-fi shows don't let their significant others in on the secret, because they "try to protect them".

- Romantic Plot Tumors

- Adults Are Useless

I hate that. The Stephanie Plum novels do it too, and I always end up skipping half the first chapter because it's stuff I've already read ten times already.

When the love interest's life is on the line and the bad guy says something along the lines of 'give me that plot device that will allow me to do bad things that more or less equate to destroying the world or your love interest dies' and the hero gives them the plot device because love.
I mean it usually turns out good in the end, but what if it doesn't? The asshole allows the world to go to shit to save one person and now gets to be with them forever/however long they have left in a world where bad guy is in control/destroying everything/possibly invincible.
it annoys me far more than it really should, especially when the love interest is still in the 'we've known each other for two hours but I think I love them' area

The "man and woman hate each other at the beginning of the movie, but are totally in love at the end".
I'd love to see:
-They hate at the beginning AND the end. And all the way through. And no angry sex.
or
-They like each other at the beginning.

Re: Pet Peeve Tropes?

So...you want a static movie with static characters where nothing happens or changes?

There's quite a range between "they hate each other at the beginning and are in love at the end" and something as boring as "they hate each other at the beginning and at the end". Who the fuck wants to watch a movie about that?

Character A has a sudden flash of insight into the Plot A situation, as they are talking with Character B, and are in the middle of Plot B, then Character A rushes off to "fix" Plot A.

Which describes 99% of all TV these days.

I watch a lot of documentaries.

Re: Pet Peeve Tropes?

In anime and manga, there's almost always this point where characters either have this really dumb misunderstanding, or one character refuses to believe the other character was serious, or just this point where THEY MUST NEVER SEE ___-KUN/CHAN/WHATEVER AGAIN

And they go through this phase of sulking and angst and dooooOOOOoooom where they deliberately run away from and completely avoid/cut off contact from each other.

It makes me livid.

Also, just once I would like to see a story where people immediately believe a character confiding in them about something horrible that's happened to them.

And god I hate when female antagonists are written as trying to coerce men into sexual/romantic situations by threatening to cry for help and blackmail them by threatening to frame them for assualt. Especially when the character in question actually does it and is a minor (certain teen high school soap opera drama i am looking at you).

I hate that communication one too. It takes another form that bugs me just as much: when any characters know something that they know is important information for their side, but don't tell anyone else until it's most dramatic. With no reason for the delay. The 'that would've been very useful to know BEFORE [xyz was done and bad thing happened]' situations.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MostWritersAreWriters

It's fine to have characters that are writers and I know it can be done well--I like some of the examples on the page--but when the character is obviously a mouthpiece for the author to whine about deadlines and dealing with editors and regular people don't know how hard it is to be a tortured soul I just can't get into it.

My number one hated trope is when the bad guy kills himself so the good guys don't have to resolve the situation. It feels like lazy writing. I'm looking at you FMA Brotherhood and Sherlock.

When the main character in an action/fighting/war focused plot has tons of battles, but never ever kills anyone. In the end the villain changes sides, dies from something else or sacrifices themselves for whatever reason.

Mates/true love/destined to be/magical bond where the two don't want that magical bond/whatever and don't like each other but are forced together and eventually somehow fall in love.

I would like people to just fall in love. Simple love (which is not simple at all) seems rare in fandoms these days.

"pair the spares". Why does everyone have to be in a relationship? And why does that relationship have to be with others in that small circle?

Fic-exclusive problem: when sex (or things related to sex) keep popping up in the narrative at inappropriate times.

I recently read a story set on an actual battlefield, in an actual battle, and the POV character couldn't stop waxing poetic about the sunlight in the hair of the other half of the fic-ship. IT WAS RIDICULOUS.

On the story telling side: Omnidisciplinary Scientists without a good justification for it, especially very young human ones without powers. So for example I would say the Doctor and Walter Bishop would get a pass; but on those same shows Liz Shaw and Peter Bishop possess skills far beyond the reasonable for their years even for the sf genre. And all the omnidisciplinary scientists on crime/procedural shows are even worse because the bar of suspended disbelief is way lower.

On the film-making side: Excessive shaky cam. I have a higher tolerance for it than some people (my mom), and I think it can be used to great effect, but there is a definite line between handheld immediacy and handheld CONFUSION. I couldn't get into Southland because the shaky cam and randomly desaturated filters were so unappealing.

I hate, hate, hate character A not telling character B or C or whatever something becasue it's 'too complicated' or 'to protect' them. Especially when not having the info actually puts the characters into danger. SO ANNOYING.

I also hate the character who has a lot of knowledge and/or power but won't help or just hints around at things and never actually *helps*.

Oh yeah, man, that is so annoying!

Um, I don't like it when a woman is the villain and the only reason she's evil is because she's in love with the real villain or because she wants to be beautiful forever or something. Oh, and that she probably uses sex as a weapon. It's just so overdone and I hardly ever see anything different. It's not only insulting it's just plain boring.

Ah, so there is a name for that misunderstanding trope! I've hated it all my life. I couldn't even get through a Flinstones episode as a child without grinding my teeth over how a simple five-second conversation could solve every problem. To this day, nothing makes me pull out of a show/movie/book faster.

I hate the 'Deus ex machina' trope. What's the point of having a complicated story that won't even get resolved with the help of the characters?
