Suburban American culture (at least in the midwest and northeast in my experience) has created a scenereo where someone might not be exposed to the concept of gayness or lesbianism except in broad and confusing generalities until they're pretty easily in their teens.
If there was any way we could make sure that yaoi wasn't some people's first exposure to homosexuality at all I guess I wouldn't have the problems I have with it; but let's face it, there isn't. Sexuality is a confusing enough issue for so many people without his or her first introduction to their choices in sexuality being introduced in pornographic stereotyping.
This is not the fault of yaoi of course, it's the fault of parents and mentors who don't take it upon themselves to be open about discussing sexual issues with older children and teens. IT IS ALSO the fault of all those teenage girls/boys who knowingly lie about their age and view matierial that they know was not intended for them. Nevertheless, I think this responsibility, to present sexuality in an honest and open way, even though it is nearly impossible to do in pornography, is still something the porn community has to at least consider.
Anyway, sorry for the tl;dr Thoughts on Yaoi.

why?

As for the first line in your comment, would you agree that the straight pornography industry in the United States has ever educated young men, whether positively or negatively, about sex and how to deal with women? If so then responsibility or not, and whether positively or negatively, the author IS educating the reader. So it's not an issue of IF it's an issue of WHEN and HOW. That's exactly the scenerio I was referring to in my original comment.

(Anonymous) 2007-09-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)how about the author/porn industry reinforcing that what they are producing is FANTASY and how it is NOT representative of reality?

The fantasy/reality thing is completely what I was trying to talk about (sorry if I wasn't specific or failed at wording it right) and it's of course an issue that has to be dealt with not just in porn but in the media at large. It is also, of course, something that should be re-enforced by hypothetical teenager's parents, natch.
