Is it generally agreed to be the worst? Genuinely asking, I'm unfamiliar with fandom consensus, if there is one.

I mean, it goes all over everywhere and gets unfocused and spins its wheels and has Trickster Mode, but at least it doesn't spend fifty panels on sylladex shenanigans, which are kind of amusing to me but a real trial to get through when I'm trying to sell someone else on the story.

The main reason I'm less interested in 6 is that it doesn't focus so much on the characters I'm most interested in, so I don't understand why, if the Alphas are your favorites, you'd think it's the worst.

(Unless your brain is still oozing out your ears from Trickster Mode.)

No? Probably depends on which circles within circles within circles of fandom you hang around, but it's all mixed. You get folk saying the first act sucks because it takes forever to speed up the pacing, and you get folk elsewhere saying Act 5 (the troll half) is particularly shit and the point where it declines as a story, and you even get the weirdoes who think the first Intermission was terrible (and they are simply wrong).

My own opinion mostly jives with yours though, especially regarding how disorganised it feels. It's a lot of TEENAGER DRAMA to me, but it's highlighted by things like the introduction of Calliope and Caliborn, as well as the super uplifting "Dirk: Synchronize/Unite", that makes it worth it for me. Like those moments actually feel like payoff to me.

So much this. I have a friend I've been trying to get into this, but the sylladex and strifing crap in Act I is really getting in the way.

ayrt

I ended up reading it to my sister while she played The Sims. "Okay, uh... blah blah sylladex shenanigans... blah blah... okay, here's story... all right, now you actually need to watch this part." She humored me for an impressively long time before falling in love with the trolls.

Act 6 has its moments, but mostly it just feels really disjointed, introduces a lot of new characters who don't really do anything and feel like they're just there to pad the flash games, and the stuff with the characters we've grown attached to over the past 5 acts focuses on boring teenage relationship drama.
...Actually, that's my problem with Act 6 in general, it feels really bogged down by boring teenage relationship drama that doesn't really go anywhere and doesn't seem to have much of a point.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are all good points, and I'm pretty sick of the teenage relationship drama myself... although I still might prefer it to sylladex shenanigans.

I just started reading it and I like the alphas too, OP. But I dunno if it's the worst? Because I'm still half-way through the damn thing and it's confusing as hell. ლ(°A°ლ) At least there's still act 6.6(?) to go?

Alpha kids are my favorite of the kids.

Wouldn't call their act the "worst," though.
Honestly, I found a lot of the stupid game inventory jokes early in the comic, that just dragged on and fucking ooonnn, to be way more annoying.

Whenever people whine about act 6, I always have to resist the urge to say, "you just don't get it!!" Because, of course, different people have different tastes; it's not a matter of "getting it" or not; I'm not somehow superior just because I like it. Though I do sometimes wonder how someone can love the entire rest of Homestuck but hate act 6. I really don't see how it's much different than it was before, other than the characters involved.

My instinct on those folks is often that they skipped to act five.

...Is that something a lot of people do?

Yeah, it is. It's also something that I've seen a lot of people recommend.

B-but how do they even hope to understand the plot? And there are so many sweet moments in acts 1-4, and it's not like 5.1 doesn't drag a bit too. It just sounds like such a bad idea, I can't wrap my head around it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
My guts suggest that maybe the OP never read that act archivally. But surely the Alpha kids will also be in Act 7, so this secret may well expire within months.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like the alpha kids are more well-built than the betas, characterisation wise. It feels like Hussie gave their personalities much more thought, and they have this three-dimensional feel to them that I really like. So, that's why I agree with you on that.

Also, act 6 is annoying because it's long and there's too much information being dumped at the reader about a whole lot of different sets of characters all the time, so I agree with you on that too.

Basically, I agree with you.

Hm, I never considered who my favorite group was.

I think it's the girls.

Same. All the girls, Alpha, Beta, and Trolls.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I like the alpha kids, and I like that they all interact with each other a lot more than the beta kids did (half the time I forgot that Rose and Jade knew each other, since they barely talked), but it's frustrating how their arc so far has put so much more emphasis on developing the Dirk/Jake/Jane and Jake/Dirk/Roxy love triangles than anything else. Their relationship drama is the least interesting thing about them, yet it's the thing that gets the most focus.
