But just about the only time I remember seeing a naked dude in an anime is in Wolf's Rain, and I have no idea whether he was equipped with nipples or not.

Only since a certain internet reviewer mentioned it, since then it has been bandwagon leapt on by anime bashers to bash anime. Male nipples aren't drawn due to their relative small size not being noticeable on most screens (although that may be changing with HD becoming more widespread and CRTs having fallen to oblivion) so on oldschool series it wasn't worth drawing them, and that is all.

Rofl for me it's the opposite. Everytime I see anime nipples, it reminds me of the few porny anime I've seen where they have this incredibly shiny nipples. It gives me so much second-hand embarrasment, and I don't even know why.

most people also just can't draw them in a way that looks good or translates well to animation. So... I guess I'd just rather take the nippless wonders over "what is that?"

it bothers the hell out of me too but you have to understand that's because it's harder to animate. like, if the nipples were off the mark it'd probably be way more distracting.

And in a lot of older series (anything older than five years) they wouldn't be that noticeable even if they were drawn. It is only really noticeable on modern systems, older CRT televisions and non-HD devices didn't have resolutions high enough to make it worth being 100% anatomically correct, and playback quality gets fuzzier and fuzzier the further back you go.

I never thought of that before, it certainly makes it a bit less creepy than if they just didn't like them. Although, it's no excuse for when mangas do it, which thankfully doesn't seem to be as often.

Somehow this doesn't bother me as much as when women are depicted with scanty clothing that shouldn't cover their nipples, and yet their nipples are nowhere to be seen anyway. (Possibly it disturbs me more due to the implication that the nipples have somehow migrated to bizarre, anatomically improbable places.)

It only bothers me when there's a sex/nude scene and the female character has nipples when the male character doesn't. Just... does not compute.

Most male characters also lack navels because their pecs get in the way.
And don't get me started on eye lashes ;)

i say this as a fan but lolol there is SO MUCH ANATOMY FAIL in anime!! eyes don't usually take up half your face and baby blue hair is not natural and yet...

of course, you're allowed to be annoyed by whatever but, imo, lack of nipples feels so insignificant compared to some of the other things that are glaringly unrealistic.

It was (is?) a censorship thing, as far as I'm aware. Nipples were considered too lewd, even in males apparently. I think the laws changed but the trend kinda stuck.

It only bothers you with dudes? There are a lot of anime out there that don't draw female nipples, either. So, you know, at least a lot of shows are consistent in their boycotting of all things nipple.

I never noticed this was a thing on male characters. I've only noticed on female characters in ecchi scenes because I guess nudity is okay as long as it's anatomically incorrect or something?

Japan is one of the few places that's consistent about their "ewww, nipples!" hysteria. Most other places, it seems, it's only "eewwww female nipples!" while shirtless dudes and their nipples can be paraded around at leisure.
