Like her dad.

Where's that tumblr post about the adventures of Charlie.

I'd totally read them.

The only reason I'd feel the need to open those books again is to see if I missed something the first time around, because I was pretty indifferent to book Charlie, but movie Charlie was amazing.

I don't see how Charlie is amazing. He congratulated Jacob on molesting his daughter.

I fucking hate book!Charlie for a long list of reasons that culminate at him barely being in Bella's life for 17 years (and yes, he could have been a bigger part of it if he'd made an effort and been willing to uproot) and then getting to parent her and be the one parent that still gets to know she's alive. All because Bella's Mom's the "flighty" one.

Honestly, I don't even get the people in the books who are like "think of Charlie! What would this do to him?" when the answer should be "Who cares, I barely know the man."

(Yes, I have issues related to this.)

I never read it, but I watched one of the movies and I tried to read The Host. The Host felt like a very early draft to me and Twilight is probably the same way. It could have been good if she'd re-written it about 50 more times.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Rewrite it, change the names, and make it better. Hell, if they'll give 50 Shades a book deal... a fantastic author can do a lot for a story because *nuance* and *talent* :)

Yeah, I hate wasted potential. And that book had so much of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I would say that it also needed a better production team (and casting department, yee Gods). I've picked up the Graphic Novels for the books and they're already waaaaaay better than either the books or the movies, even though the story's the same. I think it's because you actually see characters emote enough to convince you.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only ever seen the movies, but I really agree with this. It really had potential to be good and it used absolutely none of it. I honestly got a bit fired up in the last movie watching Bella post-transformation, I liked the whole indignant goddess thing she had going on, but then...it just went nowhere. So disappointing.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't that just be... Buffy the Vampire Slayer? I mean Twilight was pretty much a Buffy fanfic anyway.

I agree, OP. I think this series could have been AMAZING if the right person wrote it and actually put some thought into it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw The Host the other day and couldn't help but feel the same. The movie was incohorent at best, didn't have a structure at all and the romance part was fucking uneccessary, but the world and characters?

So much wasted potential.

*sigh*

I have half a mind to rewrite it as a fic just to make myself less angry about the waste. But then I remember my unfinished original novel and how far behind I am on that.

My first reaction to reading Twilight was the urge to rewrite it. Y'know, where the characters have actual chemistry and there's logic behind their actions and they're actually LIKABLE people. Because yeah, the potential is there, but it was executed really poorly. But then I decided that I have better things to do.

Ever read Luminosity, OP? It has troubles of its own, but it is essentially a Twilight re-do that (at least I would say, as someone who's read Twilight) is quite a bit better.

No, I'm in complete agreement with you.

A better author...or at least one who didn't finish writing it the first draft and decide it was done.

That's actually what makes me so angry about the series, tbh. Under the horrific message of STALKING IS AWESOME (etc) and the just plain shitty writing, the basic idea and the world itself could have been SO INTERESTING.

minus sparkling. that shit's not right, yo. XD

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Really? The universe itself seemed pretty overdone and boring to me. Nothing that hasn't been seen before in millions of teen vampire lit.

Said pretty much by everyone who likes the series even a little bit.

Because really that's the biggest reason. Potential. Like so many other failed ventures, Twilight had potential by having interesting characters (aside form the main 3 ha!) and lore (aside from the sparkle-ness...).

If anyone wants to be disappointed, go read Stephenie Meyer's notes that give more detailed background info on some of the other Cullens and vampires. She focused on the wrong couple. Alice/Jasper were so much more interesting with their origin stories. Even Rosalie has a decent story. Carlisle... the whole book probably should've been about him... how he came to be, his time with the Volturi, and what became of him when he left.

She had some good ideas, but if in the hands of maybe a few writers for a tv show it could've been much better. And probably people would praise the show (or at least have a less crazy following) instead of the joke Twilight actually is.

May I direct you to the TwiSpiteFic community on LJ? It's made of fanfic-writers/sensible!anti-fans who exploit the wasted potential of the series in different ways. Including, but not limited to, Rosalie/Emmett romance, some awesome crossovers, and loads of movie!Charlie love. And there's some 50 Shades inspired stuff there too, if you were wondering what might have been there, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I've always thought that Twilight read like the bad high school AU fanfic of a much better series.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I ABSOLUTELY AGREE!
It's the same with The Host: the world-building is stunning and mindblowing and has sooooo much potential, but she just doesn't know how to handle that or maybe she doesn't recognize it. I mean, of all the things in Twilight, that have a deeper history or need further explaining or left many things usaid, what does SMeyer chose? To write a book about that one younger vampire girl (name?) prancing around until she gets killed off, just like the others. Yeah, wow. The world needed that. >_____<
She got better in The Host though, I have to give her that. but still...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I feel this way about Discworld, too.
