the thing that really gets me is that rape garners a lower MPAA rating than pleasurable sex... for a woman. A woman enjoying sex is a lot likelier to get hit with the kiss-of-death NC17 than an extended rape scene.

That makes me want to vomit.

Yeah, I heard about that.

If a recall correctly there was a scene in Sucker Punch where the main character was supposed to seduce and sleep with the antagonist willingly.
But they weren't allowed to do that without getting higher rating. BUT they were allowed to do a scene where he rapes her and keep the rating. They pretty much said fuck you to that, and left out the scene entirely.

"BUT they were allowed to do a scene where he rapes her and keep the rating."

Minor error: He only tries to rape her. Not a major difference in the tone of the film, but your argument becomes "Attempted Rape is fine but sort-of consensual sex is not", while this doesn't really devaule your point about the fucked up standards too much, I do think the fact that no-one got penetrated is the key point in deciding the rating

In the actual film he only tries. But that's because the director refused to do full rape scene, which would have been allowed.

That's... very, very distressing.

Maybe this is only true in my head, but I always thought it was because "a realistic rape scene is meant to horrify, not titillate, so that is why it's rated lower."

Because even if the act itself is sexual in nature, it's not really meant to be attractive... so it follows all other forms of violence in having lower age rating.

Yeah, This Film is Not yet Rated talked about that. Boys don't cry got an nc-17 because Lana's orgasm was "too long."

That makes absolutely no sense. What is the reasoning behind that?

Because women getting pleasure out of sex is perverse and disturbing and twisted, whereas a woman getting raped is just normal behavior.

Wait

Hang on

Okay, yeah, that makes sense!

Your Angua icon deserves an internet high five. Place your hand on the screen to collect it.

Also gay content is judged much more harshly than straight content
