I haven't read the books, either. I watched the first season, and actually, I didn't like the series at all. I found it gratuitous to the point of feeling unrealistically intentional. but because of probably FandomSecrets, I became interested in Ramsay/Theon. the most gratuitous, torture-porn, rape-tastic of all. I don't know why, though I have a kink for abduction and mild abuse, this is nothing I should logically enjoy or seek out.

so basically I know nothing about the series, but now I watch the Theon scenes and read them when I can find them, and look for fanfiction for them. I used to hate the constant FB updates of "NEW GOT EPISODE TONIGHT" but now it means I can go see if anything else has happened.

wtf is wrong with me.

that being said, OP, I imagine there are a lot of fans who haven't read the books. but if I were in your position, I'd also be wary of the community because I personally hate spoilers for series I'm invested in. hopefully you can find a good comm where mods strictly enforce no spoilers on main pages.

but if it makes you feel any better, i've done this with a few series myself in the past and sometimes ended up liking the fanon version of a series better than the canon when i finally got around to giving it a chance

sadly i just can't get into GoT!Theon much

ia though, i think there's lots of fans who only watch the show in fandom, and there may even be communities that specifically focus on the show

Yeah, I have to say it isn't the first time I've attached myself to a weird pairing despite not having seen/hating the series. Usually said pairing seems to feature some extreme kink of mine, so. D: And right, sometimes the fanon version just fits better, or I'm so invested in it that if I ever finally do get around to reading/watching the original, I'm just disappointed.

in the first season I watched of GoT I didn't like Theon because I didn't like any of the characters (except maybe the kids), along with not liking the overuse of shock-factor elements in like every episode.

but now that I've attached myself to theon and his porn, I like him. lol it probably helps that I'm incapable of not feeling bad for even the worst of characters during torture scenes. I also find extreme power dynamics sexy. I promise I'm a gentle person irl, haha
