(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)Anyway, it's series 3 by now, and I'm a really slow, difficult reader. I actually tried reading the first one and gave up a few chapters down the line.
Even if I'd pick it up again, I can managr maybe one "easy" book a month, by which I mean like a 150-200 page detective novel. The Asoif books are like 3-4 times that size, and twice and really dense in information. In a best case scenario, I'd need 3-4 months to struggle through one of them, and adding to that I'm doing a course where I'll have 6 mandatory books to read before the year is through.
In short, there's simply no way I'd manage to be "up to speed" even before season 4 - let alone now.
I also just think it's one of those things where I simply might njoy the adaptation more.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)either way i think sticking to the HBO adaptation is fine

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 12:12 am (UTC)(link)Or just say "fuck spoilers", read spoilers, and throw yourself into the fandom. The show is changing so much from the books anyway that it will still surprise you.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)a. You can stay away from the fandom until you read the books, then dive in once you know there's nothing book-related left to be spoiled for
b. You can watch the show, not read the books, and continue staying out of the fandom in order to avoid spoilers (though I was spoiled early in the first season just by reading the comments section in an article about the show so its possible to be spoiled even when you don't actively engage with the fandom)
c. You can play in the fandom without reading the books and accept the you're going to be spoiled for things and you just have to deal with it
I can match you that first world problem and raise you one
(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 02:18 am (UTC)(link)so basically I know nothing about the series, but now I watch the Theon scenes and read them when I can find them, and look for fanfiction for them. I used to hate the constant FB updates of "NEW GOT EPISODE TONIGHT" but now it means I can go see if anything else has happened.
wtf is wrong with me.
that being said, OP, I imagine there are a lot of fans who haven't read the books. but if I were in your position, I'd also be wary of the community because I personally hate spoilers for series I'm invested in. hopefully you can find a good comm where mods strictly enforce no spoilers on main pages.
Re: I can match you that first world problem and raise you one
(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 02:32 am (UTC)(link)but if it makes you feel any better, i've done this with a few series myself in the past and sometimes ended up liking the fanon version of a series better than the canon when i finally got around to giving it a chance
sadly i just can't get into GoT!Theon much
ia though, i think there's lots of fans who only watch the show in fandom, and there may even be communities that specifically focus on the show
Re: I can match you that first world problem and raise you one
(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 03:53 am (UTC)(link)in the first season I watched of GoT I didn't like Theon because I didn't like any of the characters (except maybe the kids), along with not liking the overuse of shock-factor elements in like every episode.
but now that I've attached myself to theon and his porn, I like him. lol it probably helps that I'm incapable of not feeling bad for even the worst of characters during torture scenes. I also find extreme power dynamics sexy. I promise I'm a gentle person irl, haha
